INTEMPERANCE X - Chapter 9, Driver's Seat

I think this is a pivotal chapter in the book. Lots of Caydee in it too. Let me know what you think.

First and foremost, simply giving Drew cash would not satisfy the debt Jake feels he owes Drew. The man is a sleaze, but he did sacrifice his career for the Kingsleys. I have an entire plot point mapped out about how Jake sets Drew up in an apartment and funds his college education. Giving Drew ten or twenty grand and then just abandoning him is not likely to help Drew's actual post-pap life, while funding a college education for him (all the way to doctor or lawyer was the promise) is worth a hell of a lot more than ten or twenty grand and sets Drew up for a comfortable life if he puts in the effort. As for the airport trips, I probably should mention that Drew just rode in the back seat of the Navigator and ducked down when they passed the Johansen spot. Jake could have then driven directly to the hangar area. Even if the pap were following, they can't get into the hangar area without a swipe card allowing entrance through the gate. Therefore he could just hang out in the hangar while Jake parks the vehicle and put Drew inside the aircraft before he wheels it out. As for what happens after the article is published, it doesn't matter at that point if everyone knows about it because Jake can publicly say that he's helping Drew out because of what he did. There is no ethical or legal snag if he frames it that way. He could even put out a statement about it because it happens AFTER the article is published and does not suggest prior collusion with him. They could also fund the college through other means that aren't public if they choose to.

Just read the chapter again. Can Al (or someone) explain to me how the Watcher would "sniff out" Jake just giving Drew some cash? I'm not talking about tens of thousands of dollars. But having Drew stay first at the Campus and then at Kingsley Manor seems crazy risky to me, and it will undermine the case against the Watcher. It hurts their claim that the photos didn't come from Drew. For example -- there weren't any pap at the Johansen Spot when Drew and Caydee left to get Drew, stick him in the trunk, and drive him home, since it was late. But what about when Jake and Drew left the next morning for the airport, to fly to San Francisco? Wouldn't the usual cadre of paparazzi be there at that point? Did Drew have to ride in the trunk again (there's no indication of that)? I just don't get why Jake didn't give Drew a couple grand in nice, untraceable cash and drop him off at a hotel somewhere to ride this out. The Kingsleys have "money falling out of their assholes," as we know -- surely they keep some fun money in the house, yeah? What am I missing here? Why is that a worse option than having to defend why Drew came to the Campus and the fact that his departure supposedlt wasn't logged and (if spotted by the pap) that he was seen leaving Kingsley Manor with Jake?

Nice. Really loved Caydee’s channeling of her Abuelo. Putting her in the scene added humor to the whole clandestine operation of moving Drew and his reaction was priceless.
