INTEMPERANCE VIII - Chapter 16, She Had a Ticket to Ride
Added 2024-07-10 00:35:15 +0000 UTCMoving toward the end of 2003 in this chapter. Some significant changes take place with the Kingsley household, Helen takes a little flight with Jake, and Matt has some concerns. Keep the comments coming so I know how I'm doing.

"Fortunately, she did only that and did not use the brakes. That would have been an automatic fail." -- really? Autofail just for braking? That seems unlikely.

2024-08-29 11:46:25 +0000 UTCReally interested on how you views changed! So would you write Greenies differently now? What about all the conspiracy-theory-type stuff about corporations controlling everything and shutting down news stories?
JC
2024-08-29 11:21:14 +0000 UTCHaha I always wondered that too, about Guitar Hero players
JC
2024-08-29 11:19:34 +0000 UTCjust reading this as noticed one typo "Very proud,” Jake confirmed. “Now how about we get ourselves home?” His words definitely had more than one meeting." should be meaning? ( apologies if already picked up)
Steve Braden
2024-07-27 16:31:39 +0000 UTCAs the chapter title implies: She had a ticket to ride and she didn't care. Now she does, a little bit.

2024-07-15 20:13:05 +0000 UTCPoor Helen, enjoying a healthy dish of " coulda, shoulda and woulda"

2024-07-15 16:30:34 +0000 UTCIt seems Laura enjoyed the experience - I think it could be an interesting minor plot going forward... It could keep Helen involved a bit (at least thru the IFR training) and if Jake and/or Intemperance go out on tour again, it could give Laura the flexibility for travel to Idaho or other possible sub plots.... Just my opinion, they are your characters after all!!) ;-)
Jeff J.
2024-07-15 01:20:43 +0000 UTCIf they are doing this, it is taking place off-page as it has no bearing on advancing the plot forward at this time. If, in the future, there is a potential plot point in such a thing, it can easily be added in.
Al Steiner
2024-07-14 21:54:56 +0000 UTCIt would take more than a year of building up necessary flight hours, classes, flight time, check rides, and other bureaucracy and red tape in order to have her be able to legally fly the Avanti. Maybe when Caydee is in high school and Cap is starting junior high, they might have time for that. There is no need for it now. She just wants to be able to get the plane safely on the ground in an emergency, which Jake is working on with her (as will be seen in the next chapter). Also, Caydee is in kindergarten, not preschool.
Al Steiner
2024-07-14 21:53:35 +0000 UTCAl would KVA be early adopters for making Myspace pages for themselves and or do they have official websites for there bands and solo stuff i would think they would with Bill spearheading this?
James Harrold
2024-07-12 02:06:06 +0000 UTCWell, Caydie is in preschool. Geez, get her certified! ;-) I can imagine Jake being nervous about this—or would he be supportive? Or both? LoL! But seriously, I understand your reasoning, but you haven't shared Jake and Laura's reasoning with your readers.

2024-07-12 01:05:29 +0000 UTCThey will likely just rent one for her when she wants to fly just for the fun of it or simply wants to add hours to her logbook for appearance's sake. It is likely she would rent something a little more exciting than a 172 though. Maybe a Mooney Bravo? It's fast for a single engine piston plane, and handles much better.
Al Steiner
2024-07-11 23:33:43 +0000 UTCRegrettably, based on the timeline, it appears the next album might be titled “From the Grave”, as Matt's time seems limited. It's unlikely they'll fully master the next album prior to his passing.
Kevin Gates
2024-07-11 22:25:20 +0000 UTCAre they going to buy a new single engine plane for her to fly or just keep renting them?
James Harrold
2024-07-11 05:05:02 +0000 UTCTo legally fly the Avanti, she would have to be IFR trained, multi-engine trained, pressurized cabin trained, and then type trained in the Avanti in particular. She doesn't have the time or inclination for all of that. Her primary goal was to be able to fly the Avanti in an emergency, which Jake will be working on with her as the story progresses. Helen was already a trained, IFR, pressurized, multi-engine pilot and even then, everyone was nervous about her taking the controls.
Al Steiner
2024-07-11 04:35:08 +0000 UTCNo. That is something that would have to be mixed as far as sound goes and they have been working on other things. They have all the footage and sound recordings, however, but that would be a project for the future.
Al Steiner
2024-07-11 04:31:23 +0000 UTCHey, why hasn't Laura started to get certified to fly the Avanti? She would have to take the course at one of the Avanti centers, though, wouldn't she? Was that in Denver or something like that? I must admit I was jealous on her behalf when Jake let Helen fly it.

2024-07-11 02:18:28 +0000 UTCIs Intemperance going to release a DVD of the never say never tour for Xmas or have they released it earlier?

2024-07-10 22:56:00 +0000 UTCI would say that is correct, followed closely by Caydee in her first learning to talk years, and then Nerdly.

2024-07-10 19:59:15 +0000 UTCAlmost from the first Intemperance novel, I’ve wondered which character Al likes working with the most. There are a slew to choose from, but I think it’s Matt.

2024-07-10 16:47:32 +0000 UTCThat is all very interesting, and I was not aware of any of it. However, the conversation will remain unchanged as Jake himself doesn't know that either (nor does Helen). He would take restricted airspace around a USAF base that launches rockets very seriously and would assume (as I did) that it would be well defended from the air against intruders. If your information is correct and interceptors need to scramble and then fly all the way from Fresno, it is kind of appalling, especially post 9/11.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 16:47:14 +0000 UTCThank you, and is actually Mick Jagger and Keith Richards I'm kind of envisioning when I picture Matt these days. Though maybe not that extreme, maybe the way they looked in the late nineties.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 16:41:38 +0000 UTCNo, they would not be willing to break even or take a loss. Jake is a good capitalist now, despite near-communist leanings in his younger days (Jake's evolution from younger days to forties is very much like my own) and would embark upon no project of this scale that would not make it worth their while.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 16:39:34 +0000 UTCNope, they wouldn't want their music used for either one if given a choice.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 16:35:51 +0000 UTCWith New Zealand back in the picture, it might be worth doing a small festival down under, since Jake still loves the country. It would allow him to spend some more time there and I can't imagine that New Zealand would object to the influx of a few thousand tourists. While Jake is growing in the industry and KVA is kicking ass, I don't know how hard the sell would be to do a festival for the rest of the owners, it's a huge amount of work, and I doubt the return would really make up for that. Would they be willing to just break even, or risk taking a loss for such an event?

2024-07-10 16:02:27 +0000 UTCp.3 - “Lost Angeles Center, Avanti November Charlie" should be "Los"

2024-07-10 15:03:25 +0000 UTCA couple of minor notes: Vandenberg is spelled with a second E, not a U - it's a common mistake but you can check - and they don't have fighters or interceptors there (and didn't in the early 2000s either). Routinely, the only air operations at Vandenberg are transient C-5s for big satellites, and helicopters which chase away boats that penetrate the maritime bubble during launch operations. Air Force aviators tease Vandenberg for having a 15,000 foot runway that is barely used (they built it for the shuttle, but never used it), and naval aviators are savage: "Even an Air Force pilot should be able to land on that!" The closest place with anything that looks like an air defense mission is the Fresno ANG, who would sent a two-ship of vipers (F-16s), and that only if they were on alert, or had some advance warning or were already aloft. Realistically, they'd drop a dime to the FAA with your transponder, and you'd have an awkward conversation on the ground, if you grazed the bubble.

2024-07-10 13:11:19 +0000 UTCExcellent progress again Al! As a long time Stones fan I have been following their North American Tour via Youtube - I get a bit of a sense that Matt is heading along the road like Mick and Ronnie with the ageing process - it is amazing that they can still Shred and Rock-it-up like they do as they approach double Matts age! My first Stones concert was back in 1968 after I had started earning! - I was around when Brian drove has car into the swimming pool and drowned! Keep up the good work!

2024-07-10 07:32:14 +0000 UTCI'm glad you enjoyed it. It was fun bringing Helen back into the story.

2024-07-10 07:04:26 +0000 UTCThat's a thought I will ponder. A very interesting idea on more than one level.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 07:03:45 +0000 UTCI always have enjoyed Helen’s character. It’s a mark of a great writer, in my mind, when I viscerally feel for Helen’s emotions as she departed SLO. Thank you for the chapter

2024-07-10 06:52:07 +0000 UTCWould KVA ever consider putting together a music festival like TSF? I recall Obie pondering the logistics while he was watching Jake’s set. With KVA’s V-Tach, Brainwash, Celia and Jake’s solo work, Intemperance and Obie’s acts could there be a crossover festival? Reading about some of today’s music festivals and the various bands made me curious that something could originate from Jake’s musical genius.

2024-07-10 06:42:38 +0000 UTCI would personally think they might see a difference between licensing for movies and licensing for commercials because of the relationship they both had with Greg.
James Harrold
2024-07-10 06:34:09 +0000 UTCI always wondered about people obsessed with that game, practicing to get it perfect. Why not spend all the time and training muscle memory to learn how to play an actual guitar?
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 06:01:27 +0000 UTCAlso, I just looked it up. The first Guitar Hero came out in 2005, so a few years ahead of where we are now. But thanks for mentioning it. I'll keep it in my mind as a possible plot point because they are likely working on the game in 2003 and will likely be looking for music to put on it in the very near future. The suits at National would likely grant such a license for the tunes they control from both Intemp and Matt's solo stuff as it would bring in a few bucks.
Al Steiner
2024-07-10 05:58:47 +0000 UTCMatt would still need Jake to produce his solo music if he went that route. He can, of course, just sign with one of the bigs, but he would be in the same situation that led him to signing with KVA in the first place: They would just want him to pound out a quick CD and then go out on tour. They also would not offer as much money as KVA pays. He also, despite his general disposition, if loyal and would likely not abandon Jake and KVA. Also, he would make more money as part of an Intemperance tour after the CD was released. As for Jake or Celia licensing any of their music for commercials or movies, they would not do that. It has been made clear in previous books that they are opposed to such a thing. National could release previous Intemperance or early Matt Tisdale material for Guitar Hero, but nothing under the KVA label would be licensed. Matt could do his solo material from his KVA CD if he wanted, but he would hate the idea even more than Jake and Celia.

2024-07-10 05:24:30 +0000 UTCThanks, will fix these tomorrow in the edit. I'm having trouble with my eyes lately, particularly after being in front of the computer so much. New glasses on the way will hopefully help me catch this stuff in my own edit.

2024-07-10 05:17:24 +0000 UTCVery Interesting Chapter, was wondering why Matt doesn't just make new solo music it has got to me more profitable for him? I was also wonder if Jake licenses his solo work for movies and video games because Guitar Hero has got to be in development now or soon would be.

2024-07-10 04:21:22 +0000 UTCNotes: "I for one, am happy you made that decision the way you did." "I, for one, am happy"? "It was allowed me to be the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”" "It has allowed me" or "it's what allowed me" "“Uh… well… I guess, “she said" Looks like the space shifted on you after the comma, and you got the wrong quotation marks at the end there. "as it made its takeoff tun." Should this be "takeoff run" or "takeoff turn"? Or is this an aviation term I'm not familiar with? "saw that Helen, by using the yoke and the throttles, had then at 140 knots of airspeed and increasing" "had them"? Or is there a missing word here? "Our target altitude is FL-160," and then later "She leveled out at 15,000" Is there a reason they settled into a different altitude than they'd planned? "“Who know?” he asked." Is this intentionally incorrect to display his incomplete mastery of English, or just a typo? (It should be "Who knows?") "As suspected, here had been no trouble" there had been "(this was, of course, a lie, but she had to give them something)." Maybe capitalize "This"? Though I'm not totally sure that's needed for a parenthetical like this. "he was pulling the Avanti out of it’s hangar" it's->its "which is in Southeast Asis near Vietnam" Asis->Asia

2024-07-10 02:34:29 +0000 UTCA thought: "It was time for the student to become the master." This works fine, describing Jake's role reversal, but I think it might be more interesting to say "time for the master to become the student", shifting the focus a bit more to Helen, and using a slightly non-standard variation of the idiom. It's certainly fine as-is, just something to consider (if you haven't already).

2024-07-10 02:28:01 +0000 UTCThanks for the chapter, Matt's certainly always an interesting character. The rapid aging does make me think maybe he has some more/new medical issues on the horizon.
