Songs From the Master List, Vol. IV | Fan Favorites, Episode 22
Added 2024-01-31 01:26:40 +0000 UTC
Hi y'all,
I think we really started the year off well with this Fan Favorites episode. All four of these classic tracks were first time listens for me...and I loved them all. Actually, I found a common thread shared among these tracks as I listened. I hope you enjoy!
Music Included:
The Great Escape - Marillion
All of the Above - Transatlantic
July Morning - Uriah Heep
So Sincere (Live) - Gentle Giant
Finally got to watch this in full. Great reactions, but by far the best part was the closing thoughts. Thanks for all you do, Doug.

You need to do the entire album "Brave" on an EPL. It's terrific, and DEPRESSING.

Watching the gentle giant performance, it struck me that was broadcast on national TV. What chance that would happen today?

Gentle Giant , one of the greatest bands of all times. Their love for music is contagious and their egos never got in the way of it which I also like very much , I consider them the "Led Zeppelin of progressive music" (similar life span as well).

Wow, I forgot that I was the one to suggest So Sincere live version. Perhaps the first time my suggestion made it to any Doug show, so I'm glad and thank you Doug for that.
And Uriah Heep with Marillion in addition. An excellent episode!

The story of Brave is even darker than your analysis and more literal than metaphorical. But we'll save that for when you do the entire Brave album.
I was front and center at Transatlantic's first gig at NEARFest 2000. "All of the Above" remains a classic and for my money SMPTe surpasses all of the collective subsequent works from this all star collection. Fabulous. This album gave me a whole new appreciation for Pete's bass work.

Beautiful video. Just beautiful. Great Escape is, indeed, a moving track. But it's even more effective as a part of the entire Brave album; reiterating themes both musical and lyrical, and bringing the story line into perspective. Brave is a *must have* at some point for an EPL. (IMHO) Marillion's last great album. One more point of info: the name Roine is pronounced "ROY-neh," the "e" is pronounced with a schwa-ish sound.

Doug, if you think the 'Great Escape' was emotion filled. Try 'Neverland' or 'Sky Above the Rain'. I challenge you to not shed a tear, and you have to see the performances live. Hogarth brings the emotion ten fold

That was great fun, Doug. Thank you!
Just for the record, SMPTE stands for Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (see Frank Zappa's song "Baby Snakes"). They are the folks who, among many other things, invented the time code that numbers frames of video and times audio recording, and allows many devices to "sync up" when recording.
Your new pipe is very pretty.

Brave is an album to listen to on a full listen. You can even go Further and fully listen to it live, as they released it on Brave Live album.

Neal Morse from 2000-2002 had Spock’s Beard V and Snow and Transatlantic SMPT:e and Bridge Across Forever. Jeez.

That was the best hour-fifteen presentation I've experienced here, even though I am familiar with all but the Marillion tune (I will be listening more to the post-Fish era!). Looking forward to more marathon listens!
