WIPWed: Jim the Wonder Dog
Added 2021-10-06 19:50:52 +0000 UTCFor those who don't know, I also host a redbubble store called Jen's Dogs (www.jensdogsCUSTOM.com) where I upload a new dog breed design on the first (ish) of every month. Today I'm sharing a as of yet unseen dog breed I created for a special event celebrating the Llewellin Setter at the St. Louis Museum of the Dog a few years ago. I will tell you the story.
So in the 1930s a Llewellin Setter named Jim was brought to Marshall Missouri. He was assumed to be a normal hunting dog, but was reported to have an uncanny ability to predict the future including the sex of unborn children and the winners of the Kentucky Derby. He stunned the academic community. Dr. A. J. Durant, director of the School of Veterinary Medicine, put him to the test in a public demonstration and reported that Jim "possessed an occult power that might never come again to a dog in many generations." He was thus titled Jim the Wonder Dog and had a park dedicated to him in Marshall Missouri complete with a bronze likeness you can go visit and I guess ask for divination?
I mean facts are stranger than fiction, right? Whether or not we in the present believe in the psychic abilities of Jim the Wonder Dog, those who encountered him did, at least enough to make him a monument. And we had a whole event dedicated to him at an actual AKC museum. I intend to redraw the Llewellin Setter for my dog series at some point, but these artworks were donated to the Marshall humane society in Jim's honor so this is the only place to see them!
