2021-11-14 12:29:03 +0000 UTCI know it's a little late for posting on this chapter, but this has been coalescing in my mind since I read it, so I decided I needed to post. I know this was a rough one for a number of people, and that Tora may even have lost a few fans, but I actually kind of expected this from him based on how he has behaved throughout the series so far. While I've thankfully never experienced physical abuse, I did have a share of emotional abuse growing up. When you hear disapproval from people long enough, over time a version of that voice starts to develop in your mind. It turns on when people give you compliments. It tells you they are probably lying, or that if they knew you better they would take that compliment back because you don't deserve it. That voice is also quick to remind you how worthless you are when something goes wrong. It doesn't matter how small the issue was or how directly you were involved in it, most everything that ever goes wrong does so because you had a hand in it. While that dark voice forms inside your mind, two things start to happen simultaneously on the outside. First, you put off an air of anger. People misinterpret even your resting posture for being mean or bitchy, and they judge you for it. Sometimes that anger takes a physical form in lashing out verbally or physically, and when it surfaces it is extremely hard to take it down until you vent enough of it to regain control. The second thing that happens is an overwhelming need for someone to tell you that you are alright, that you are good and worth their time and energy. As much as that angry voice inside your head will not let you believe them, you desperately search for validation. Tora does it all the time with Poppy, wanting to hear that she finds him attractive and that she thinks he is a good person. The times we see his inner monologue during these moments he is incredibly self debasing, a sign of the broken self esteem he carries around with him every day. In my own life my abuse history provided me with a fairly robust level of emotional intelligence. I can read people and their deeper motivations/needs and past traumas better than most people can. Tora has this ability, too. He sees it in Poppy, struggling to overcome the years of gaslighting she endured by her ex. We've all applauded Tora's emotional intelligence, sad to say it was earned at a price. Knowing the fallout that comes along with that voice and the impact it can have on others when the anger slips out, I'm a little scared for Tora moving forward. I expect things are going to be tough for him for awhile. The good news is that, with the right people in his life, he hopefully can start slowly dismantling that voice in his head and see himself more clearly. That's what happened for me, and Poppy fits the bill for the type of support he's going to need. Fully believing that you're worthy of good things is a harder struggle that will probably continue even long after he and Poppy are officially together. Thanks, Lily, for writing about these topics with such finesse and realism. No love lost for Tora from me, just a deeper understanding of his character and a growing appreciation for your work ♥️
