Having the option to change faces on court cards is something that intrigues me. But it's not just the fact that you can draw faces of friends, acquaintances or celebrities on the cards. I think it's a work-related problem - as much as I love the standard faces from USPCC, they also bore me because I see the same files which got vectorized from USPCC in Adobe Illustrator over and over again in so many decks.
For this reason, I'm fascinated by playing cards that were produced before digitalization.
Even if they have the standard looking faces, they all look different since they are never the exact same files that got printed over and over again. To be honest, I don't have a clear idea of how playing cards were produced in the past. It was certainly a back-breaking job. But at least more work went into each individual deck. That's a romantic thought for me that I don't want to be taken away from :D
With digitization, it's now up to the designer to decide what to do with the vectorized files.
In my first DSPC deck, you see some standard looking courts. I still used my own redrawn files but I didn't customize the faces. I just wanted to include my family and closest friends in this deck.
In the new white edition I don't want to keep these cards completely standard so they got a nice little and subtle update.

The orginial faces are from the very first Bicycle deck (https://www.wopc.co.uk/usa/uspcc/bicycle-1st-edition).
Much love
