Wedding countdown: 5 days to go

Today I felt the inevitability of the wedding tractor beam for the first time. It was signaled by the surprise pop-by arrival of an excited friend, the first indicator that things outside of my control were going to start happening with greater regularity.

I installed the risers on the new front stairs this afternoon. Don’t my sassafras balusters look clever? I borrowed a scroll saw for these, but can see the logic in owning one.

Earlier today I went shopping for a tie that will match Lauren’s dress, and one actually materialized at the first place I looked. Thank you for small mercies, Clackamas Nordstrom Rack. I also bought a shirt which promised to wick away the sweat stains on the 90-degree day we’re going to have. Feeling blessed by kismet, I me-dayed it at a birria cart, then a banh mi shop, then Dutch Bros for an iced decaf.

Please have a look at some candids from the recent preparations, and get ready for more action shots as the event draws nearer.

And where are these steps now? Have they stood the test of decades? For that is the true measure of the work. (Well, that and not looking silly.)

I agree with Julie above, they really do look great. One of the first 'projects' I ever attempted was replacing the rotten steps at my in laws house, about a few decades ago. Unlike many of the things I had blasted through with nary a look behind me in my young life, replacing a set of stairs required the ability to measure, and replicate those measurements in wood. Both of which I failed to do. My father in law was very kind, telling me how he wasn't afraid he would "put his foot right through" these new steps like he was before, while we both stood looking at this new set of stairs leaning subtly to the right and just a bit twisted downward towards the sidewalk. He even shook my hand when we left to go home and told me again how glad he was to have me as a son in law, but there was just a glimmer of what I imagined to to be pity in his expression. Whether for me or himself was never clear.

I don't like raw yolks so I use this to pop them and smear them around until a paste.

Thank you! They were very easy, fast, and inexpensive.

The stairs look so good dude.

Every place setting should have a rubber mallet.
