0062 — Incorrect Writing from "Pat Gives Ray a Gift"

I was intrigued by the angle of Ray putting Pat's MLM out of business by competing with a superior product wherein you could cry onto actual famous crying faces, but ultimately didn't want to make this into a whole storyline. It was once a crutch of Saturday Night Live to base a whole sketch on one funny idea (what staff writer Al Franken called, "The title tail wagging the content dog") and I always felt that method of story development quickly revealed itself as stillborn. Except perhaps for Chris Farley's "Pepper Boy," which was pure magic in real time.

Just chiming in late here, because my feelings are strong on this one. The juxtaposition of Carrot Top with Jesus Christ on the cross. More than the sum of its parts. And I loved the 90s-ness of it.

Mark Larkin

Chris Farley in the "hidden camera commercial" where he flips out after being told he is drinking decaf coffee crystals is another very simple idea with an excellent sketch.

Miles McMahon

Maybe I'm weird but a perfectly straight banana would amuse me more than bother me.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Well basically I just always assumed Ray would tell you he "ain't too much in the way of Latin"

Joshua M

I recognize he is individually important but any mention of JFK just makes me re-obsess over Jackie O's fugue state shopping sprees where she'd buy like 20 fur coats and then make the white house sort it out the next day

Hilary Kitz

Dude let’s take this to Signal. DuckDuckGo my passkey on tor.

Chris Onstad

I'm not sure why, but the phrase "famous eyes, havin' famous cries" is strongly calling to mind the chorus of "Smiling Faces Sometimes" as recorded by The Undisputed Truth. Something about the meter of it.

I'm not sure how high I am, but this must be a reference to the infamous Phantom Time Hypothesis, claiming that 297 years of history (AD 614-911) - the entire Carolingian period - were just completely fabricated, that Charlemagne didn't exist at all and that in fact it is actually the 1700s now. Are you too a Phantom Timer, my brother?? Let me send you a pamphlet

Zachary

I mean she’s been at it 297 years we all need a little boost sometimes

Chris Onstad

dude, you put all this stuff out there and you just KNOW you're gonna see it show up in roz chast's work in no time flat

Zachary

Extremely relatable

Jenn

I thought of making a time lapse of start to finish with all the edits but it would be like 1.8 petabytes

Chris Onstad

Like bugs bunny?!

Chris Onstad

As a fellow creative, I can't tell you how helpful it is to see the first draft thinking behind your work

Jenn

I always thought of Ray as more of an "ek-set-er-ah" kind of person.

Joshua M

Yeah I’m glad it didn’t run because from my listenings carrot top is just a successful dude who makes people happy. It’s very 90s to make fun of him.

Chris Onstad

I’m glad somebody caught that - I thought it was a very Ray instance of the Mandela effect

Chris Onstad

Carrot Top didn't need to get burned like that, but I'm glad we got to read it

Stavro

I love the idea that Ray assumes Marilyn was at JFK’s funeral even though she died first.

Andrew

Than you Mr. Dalton!

Chris Onstad

Right - I didn’t fully reconstruct the sketch before completing the thought. In my defense, it was Farley’s performance as the diner that made this scene incredible.

Chris Onstad

[snotty vaguely William F. Buckley voice] I fear that, er ah, your statement regarding the "Pepper Boy" is counter-historical: the rôle was in fact impersonated by Mr. Adam Sandler, not Mr. Farley.

Ian Volner

"When the only person still talkin' to him is Q" places an even darker twist on an already dark situation.

Distant Egg Song

Yeah I second that. I can see Pat pitching that at different levels, like the Mary Kay of PTSD

J Hardy Carroll

Though misguided and burdened by a sweater vest, Pat spaketh the truth: "The world has never been sadder, or needed more art, fool!" Achewood is always the best thing in my in-box—gratz 'n' platz, herr Onstad.

Rob Dalton

okay i don't know how "trauma offset credits" didn't make it
