Time Capsules (pdf)

In this new bit of writing posted exclusively for the Author's Tier, I examine the phenomenon of the time capsule as it is practiced in our culture.

The geocaching fad left so many unintentional time capsules.

My dad used to be a lot of fun when I was younger. I can't say the same these days. Anyway, when I was little, on the beach, we'd try and find a recognisable point, eg on the wall at the edge of the beach, then walk a set number of his feet -unlike mine of course we could be sure they would stay the same size- in one direction, mark the spot, and then walk a set number of dad feet in the other direction back to the wall/etc. Then we'd bury something small, usually a tennis ball or a euro, the lenght of the shovel under the sand. Usually this is done somewhere where kids wouldn't usually dig a hole, since it wasn't near the water or a rock pool. And we'd come back a year later and see if it was still where we'd left it.

a few years ago when we were renovating the kitchen of our extremely mid-1970s home, we found an empty can of Pabst Blue Ribbon with the old-style pull-tab behind the tile and sheetrock, sitting upright on a crossbar, just waiting for whatever contractor left it behind. I was inclined to return it to the walls (and add an empty can of one of our myriad local micro-brews for good measure) but was overruled.

Watching M*A*S*H for the first time and there's a late game episode about a time-capsule. Must be in the zeitgeist right now. I hide small objects I find in hotel rooms, hoping someone might stumble across them someday and smile. A little plastic figure here, a playing card there. This was a really lovely read.
