0016 - Return of Peter H. "Nice Pete" Cropes

Téodor, experimenting with risotto in a low-sided paellera, is interrupted by Peter H. Cropes, who is not sure how he should feel about a piece of packaging he encountered.

In the end, Mr. Cropes' cryptic phone call to an unseen colleague suggests that his off-screen machinations are still often fueled by a sense of anger at the way his low beginnings cast him on the stage of the world.

0016 - Return of Peter H. "Nice Pete" Cropes

Comments

Teodor is instinctively terrified of Nice Pete's voice.

J. Alex

Nice Peter Cropes giving orders of mercy over the telephone is scary times.

Ruxine

how do you take your coffee?

s b

The Nice Pete content has been my favourite of the new stuff

Brian Horstead

Nice Pete "comes from circumstances" so he cannot taste the pretentious subtleties in the coffee.

Brad Fino

A particularly good one

A. C.

Teodor's BBQ dad-ass outfit

Tovfly

He's a human type of cat

Donald Turnbaugh

I really enjoyed this

Joshua Nadas

Good side profile of Nice Pete here.

Tom PM

Damn. I wonder if Pete read that recent piece on Albini in The Guardian?

Johnny Deans

There's no-one on the other end of that line. It's pure theatre for Teodor.

Daniel Burt

Panel 6 made me laugh out loud. The last panel terrified me. Well done.

Walter Biggins

Good God I've missed this more than I realized. Nice Pete has grown and really he's just trying to be at least murdering in the most ethical manner. It is the way of the evolved man as I have been told from my extreme low background.

MisterQueue

Pete has been studying compassion, but even though he can't taste the fig overtones or acidic briar char there is still something wrong with him. I admire his strict moral code, but I think giving him any advice or opinion is a hazardous undertaking at the best of times.

J Hardy Carroll

Definitely not typing this from a sketchy castle while Hellboy punches my employer

Kriegsaffe No. 9

It might be accurate to say he lacks a sense of humor.

They’re on “Téodor is afraid of repeating the high school incident and chooses his words carefully” terms

Aaron J. Rushton

Hey you’re not one of those Frankenstein apes are you?

Aaron J. Rushton

I have been in the wine business for many years now and I promise you that no didactic wine moron has ever gone as totally insane with a tasting note as the average just-hired Counter Culture employee. Also I'm glad to see that Téodor and Pete are on ok terms, considering the...high school incident

Nicholas Williams

By God we are back

pileofbugs

Pete wasn't wrong in his initial response.

Alexander Rediger

If I'm reading it right, it *is* a problem that the coffee bean seller writes an inaccurate and/or overblown description of what the coffee tastes like unadulterated, but he is forgiven for writing that by NP because NP recognizes that the seller writes that description out of protest at the fact that the seller expects no one to taste the coffee black in the first place, and is thus disrespected by the coffee-buying public, and is thus an ally in facing up to disrespect in his own way?

Andrew

Pete's found a bud to do his deeds with, good for him.

Nick Huntington-Klein

look pete we've all been there but crime is not the way (unless...)

Michael Ryan

I don't have the first idea how you make the black cloud on the horizon that is Pete this funny, but here we are. Hell of a punchline.

Zen Window

Always walking a fine line with Nice Pete, our Teodor is. I was afraid NP was going to take Teodor’s comment in panel 7 as a slur on his modest raising, assuming that Pete was the type of person who would so adulterate his coffee. Turns out NP just likes his coffee honest, as he does like everything, and was going to Take the poor merchant for his lies. I wonder if that’s a burner phone and who does conspire with him…

Jay Williams

Me, yesterday: "What did I do to my grind, I can't taste anything in this Verve Ethiopian Worka" Me today: "Whelp, I have covid"

Sightline

Starting to really worry about Pooh Bear.

Linus Lee

This one (presumably) goes out to coffee nerds who take theirs black (me).

Kriegsaffe No. 9

Wow! Téodor! I haven't seen you in a while! Are you fat now?

Zachary

a social web as yet unseen

zoë hayden

Classic Pete

Kate

For whatever else Pete is, he is a stickler for what is honest and true, and for that he has my respect.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

no sound would ever be as sweet as Nice Pete's voice over the speakerphone saying "let him go"

emitydna

Christ alive

Ben Wissett

Did Téodor become a leather-kilt-and-sock-garters guy? Or am I projecting?

Hunter Tammaro

Is Pete pure evil, or is he merely a mirror for the evil in the world shining back on itself? Is there a meaningful difference? The answer doesn't matter, I just want him to be loved.

Don Rowe

.... human?

Ben Wissett

I thought NP worked alone! Intriguing. More NP, please.

ladiesbane

Very smart of Téodor not to get into a whole thing about brewing methods, here

Spyguitar

I love Pete

James

NP has collaborators... !

Peter Webb

probably my fav of the new stuff so far

Golander

Hang in there, Pete. Appalachia is rising.

Vijnananath

The way Téodor recognizes the voice

Cf Duddy

Second panel in the last row takes me back, he looks just like he used to.

Nikhil Brocchini

UGH perfect Pete. Glad to see this beautiful human survived the times.

Yelahneb Unicornucopiax

Legit guffaw on the ending. Doubled over style. All my teeth visible in the least threatening way my mouth can move.
