Assetbar archive: Ray's Proof You Don't Have To Read Ulysses

Even Ray gets into the short, subversive piece game once in a while. This usually happens when he himself is honked on 80-brown (so don't go throwing bottles in glass houses, Mr. Smuckles). The origin of this piece was probably Cornelius leaving a copy of Ulysses in the living room, at which point Ray took a crack at the first page, saw a glimmer of familiarity in the blackout-style writing, and called bullshit on this legendarily difficult book. "Dude really puts the 'ass' in classic, you ask me," it is possible to imagine him saying.

Takeaway phrases Ray coins here: "straight-up shittlin'," "honked on 80-brown."

Still trying to find that bottle of "Ol' Bluster".

John Ashton

This is still incredible, but I remember when I read it for the first time I laughed so hard I thought I was going to break a rib.

This was more or less the point of Robert Anton Wilson's scene where Joyce and Albert Einstein were chilling in a Zurich pub during World War I.

Just skip around to the dirty bits

RTH

Counter-point: you should read Joyce precisely *because* he was always bombed

David Kettler

My ex husband claimed to have read, understood, and enjoyed Ulysses. I think Ray has proven that my ex husband was a liar.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

back in my college days (not long after you added this to Assetbar), I included this in a presentation I had to give on James Joyce in my literature class as the last slide, while I was asking if anyone had any questions. it went over better than the rest of the presentation did.

Michelle Michelbacher

I realized the other day that at some point, I downloaded a copy of Ulysses onto my Kindle. Is it time for me to get around to reading Ulysses? πŸ€”

Jacquelyn R Walters

Good shit. Not enough Ray recently and this is just what I needed.

Meadow Green

The Sirens chapter is essentially the strip where Ray pretends to be Jack White
