0003a - "A Diversion!" (Rough Draft)

This is what the rough draft of an Achewood comic looks like, before I spend weeks workshopping the dialogue and eyebrow movements with the technicians and fellow artists at the Zinkmann Cartoonist's Center in Vail, Colorado. (Although, truthfully, it's mostly on Zoom these days.) This draft is crude, and I strongly caution you against reading it, but I did promise that in the Author's Tier you'd see all aspects of the sausage-making, not just the nice part where the smiling butcher (me) proudly holds forth his pink, well-organized tray (animals yelling about drugs). My only hopes, in releasing this item, are both your forgiveness, and your recognition of the value of the ZCC.

Just re-read a strip from 2006 about fat Roast Beef and photos and I could not feel more seen.

Might name my new band Yo Ulard Banana.

Who needed to ask “Wait…”? Come on, Teodor’s no chump when placing the modifier phrase next to the intended target.

Aaron G. Stock

I kinda want to see Teodor and Lyle crafting a reality show together, but the conversation about gummies will have to do.

J Hardy Carroll

Haha this is amazing in its own way

Clearly, the drawing is the fun part. I love how Lyle evolved over the years. Teodor looks more or less the same. I have always dug Chris's style, especially the strip where other webcomics from drunkduck.com show up and ruin the party. Speaking of webcomics, I remember in 2006 when I was obsessively working on Clench and Cheese, trying to do a strip a day every day of the week (exactly as though it was a syndicated strip ala Nancy) I would get up at 4AM and write a shit ton of loose dialogue for an hour or so. Then I would open up the Bauhaus Mirage animation program and start drawing. The story was long form from the start, so really it was a matter of doing terrible things to my characters until something happened. What happened was burnout, so when Chris folded his tent a few years later I totally got it. I am glad to see that he's found a way to make it work. You are an American original, my friend. If anyone is interested in the defunct Clench and Cheese, you can find it here along with a whole ton of other stuff https://jhardycarroll.substack.com/p/clench-and-cheese-issue-number-one

I love literally every single thing about this, especially the laugh-track cues. This is now my process for drafting work documents.

Allman bracing for the asides? Now it's all making sense!

This is awesome! I enjoy seeing a bit of the creative process at work and this in no way disappointed.

Larry Eshleman

I knew this strip was going somewhere when that first line came to me.

“What the fuck are you doing in here you dirty shit” is already my next Achewood tattoo
