Hornady Black 5.7x28mm Data Dump

Hornady is sending me 6 boxes of the Black as as well as the Critical Defense. I bought the 250 rounds for this testing from Patreon funds before I was able to get in contact with Hornady.

They are using their own brass. At least it is headstamped Hornady. There is some kind of coating on the brass.  The brass is on average 56gr vs the 60gr FN. It holds about 12.8gr of water vs 12.0-12.2 that I got from the FN. 

5.4gr powder charge, and we are meeting the BOX state veloc...

Hornady Black 4.6x30mm HK, 38gr Vmax

Not a bad showing from this 38gr Vmax. I think penetration is a little lacking, but this is only one of a few 4.6 loads. It doesn't have the construction to resist IIIA :(

LAPG Multi-curve IV (SIC)

I would say this is an improvement quality wise over the ultra budget Alumina single curve, but that does come at a cost increase of $100. That puts this plate at $200 when on sale.  For $50 more you could get RMA's 1165, or even the Highcom 4S17M. The foam ring is still present on this model, and the backer while appearing to be pressed did not take muzzle energy very well. We poked M2AP on the first shot but it was 100 fps over spec.

This stuff is WAY better than the Sterling, or Turan. However GO is sure proud of the pricing at $17+ a box.

More 9mm food from Turkey. This performed better than the Sterling, but still is slow on velocity. No weird case bulges, and it's sealed on both ends.

5.7 Vampire Fang 34gr Vangaurd Outfitters

This load had excellent function in all guns. I wonder how much hotter a 34gr load could be pushed, but it's nice to see some good velocity from the pistol barrels. Accuracy was more an acceptable, but we did have one flier with the pistol.

We're meeting min penetration depths and we're able to penetrate better than average soft IIIA from the pistol!  I rank the BDF and VF higher than the T6B because Jay's current iteration of the T6B lacks a boattail and seems to have poor accurac...

9x19mm, 115gr FMJ, Sterling Brass Case

Same results as the steel case ammo. We have some weird case expansion on the front of the case, not the rear. These loads are fairly slow but are FASTER than the steel case offerings.

I'm hearing grumblings from ammo manufacturers that supply issues with powder are creeping in again. If you have a favorite load, and it's trending downward, do NOT wait a LONG time to get some :D

They must be running some really thin cases with Sterling. I even noted the same weird forward case bulges on their brass case line. Velocity is in the gutter, but luckily it seems the price on this continues to drop. $11/50, isn't great.

LAPG Level IV 3 yr test

As they've been shown in the past, these budget plates work albeit robustness is always on the questionable end.  Being that LAPG retails the plates we don't know who actually produces these. Adhesion to the backer is always what seems to give up the ghost first. The PE seemed to be the most effected in the outdoor plate.  I would say these plates slightly outperformed the 1155. Now to bug RMA about some 1165 :D

Cleaning House - M14A1 bipod and leather goods

Hesco L211 SRT Plates

Zach over at Hesco set over a pair of Hesco L211 for us to demo. The L211 now incorporate an UHMWPE backer vs the original L210's E-glass backing. We did gain .15" in overall thickness, but we've dropped 1/2 lb. I will try to get these tested in the spring..

RMA 1155 3yr Test Complete :D

I'm sure most of you may or may not had any assumptions on the outcome of these tests. 

Our M2AP stopped on the COM shot every time. It would seem there is some weakening of the plate that allowed the M14A1 and upper corner shot of the M2AP through. The E-glass backer through remained more rigid than the PE from the LAPG. I wonder if RMA would send some single curve 1165 for the same test.

Corrosive!  The nails have spoken. Both the 5.45 and 7.62 are corrosive.  Not cool on the importer or even the manufacturer to say "non corrosive". If you bought this and are going to shoot it, clean your gun accordingly.

5.7x28mm, 30gr SS200, FN DFNS

Ladies and gentlemen, I can't believe we are led to believe this is what FN is passing off to us as legitimate self defense loads in 5.7. This has the same exact charge as the 40gr loads, which given the lighter 30gr bullet is causing all sorts of reliability issues in our guns. You'll get FBI spec penetration depths, but I am not sure how I feel about compressed metal core bullets and thin jackets being able to provide adequate wounding over even SS197SR. Speer Gold Dot 5.7 Revised and Ruined?

I didn't realize this project was literally done back in Feb 2023.  I think my hopes was that Speer was going to make good on their promise to send me some ammo to test, so I waited.

This revised lot switches from a 6 petal design to 4. They also dropped the charge .6gr. I don't know how you all feel, but this doesn't speak in confidence for use in the pistol. We have a pulled that while penetration is key, we're paying a premium for little expansion. You can get better performance...

This plate seems to use the same PE that Hanlin is using and it's very good.  Alumina continues to shine against steel cores and even contained the M2AP +P+. The inclusion of the strike face laminating layer on the strike face really improved the strike face durability

Cyelee Wolf X Pro

Chinesium indeed. Cyelee has been around for only about 4 yrs. Who's optics they are copying and or making are always a mystery.  I go back and forth on whether or not to accept some of these "collaborations" with these companies. Most of the time I decline because the products are obviously substandard or not even airsoft grade. Sometimes I'd like to see how something like this stacks up to what I consider our entry and mid grade stuff like Holosun. So, here we are.
