In the last few weeks I have been working on figuring out how to fix the first few songs in the show so that they better convey the musical style of EPIC. Here's what an updated version of the opening lines of the show could look like!

For those who don't know, I'm currently spending the next two weeks at Goodspeed Musicals in Connecticut, where I'm meeting with dramaturges and Broadway producers and getting feedback as I work on fixing Act 1. This song may very well be cut and re-written, but I still want y'all to be in on the process! :)

The biggest problems in the first half of Act 1 are that the pacing slows down tremendously during the songs Full Speed Ahead (ironically), Ismarus, Your Light, The Boy and the Boar (Warriors of the Mind), and the cyclops songs. Also, there are narrative and musical tools I use in those sections that don't match the rest of the show, such as narration from Athena as well as prolonged rap sections. Act 2 is much clearer in its musical language and much more consistent in pacing and structure, and so I'd like for Act 1 to be on the same level.
