I could see the storylines they're doing in this season being funny in theory, broadly speaking. Off course some of these things don't need to be made light of, but then again nothing strictly needs to be made light of. You simply make light of things, and then it's either funny or not. The issue in this season to me is more that it's just not working. The whole season is like some turbo-charged tiktok-edit, nothing gets to have any set-up (or the set-up happens after the joke??) and the tone is all over the place. It's not even a coherent show. Louis CK would be a good example of someone who managed to write an actual good comedy bit about predators, etc, so it absolutely can be done. As another example, It's Always Sunny has several quite funny recurring bits that I won't spoil but many know I'm sure. But it takes some thought, depth, empathy and insight(unfortunate phrasing perhaps in his CK's case but whatever) that the writers just weren't really displaying. Or if they did it got lost in the remix, I don't know. It feels like they worked backwards from "Wouldn't it be zany and whacky if THIS happened" but then unlike the earlier seasons didn't actually sketch out a funny or interesting path to that end point, and so you're just left with the shock value of the result, with no empathy and no depth. And like they noted in the discussion, that's exactly what hacky cheap comedy is, high on the shock value low on the humour. So you basically end up with a comedy show that has no story, and no comedy. It's a weird adjective to use with this show but season 1 to 3 feel grounded in comparison. It's unfortunate too because the characters in the show really are good and the actors carry it as well as they can. The show could have afforded to take itself a bit more seriously and benefited a lot in both the story and comedy department. Eventually I found myself just skipping through much of this season because with no story, or comedy, what are you really missing?

2026-02-13 17:32:38 +0000 UTCJust listened to the end talk and just wanted to add it really isn't the subject matter, it's all about is it funny or not and the whole pacing of the season 4 is garbage on top of that horrible editing completely ruining every joke with recaps/voice overs. Season 5 doesn't have those issues but also it is nowhere near as well written as the first 3 seasons. Whenever I recommend this show to someone I tell them to only watch the first three season.
