I personally enjoy the show greatly because it is one that deals with darker themes. I'm also a parent but I had a teenage life not too dissimilar from what is shown in the show. Not every single facet is the same, but a lot of it and it's comforting, in a strange way, to see my experiences manifested on screen. It's not pretty but it's real, in a lot of ways.
I can appreciate why it wouldn't be comfortable for you but I find a kind of heartbreaking beauty to it and think the acting is some of the best I've seen in a while.

The characters Rue names when she’s threatening the guy are all from the Wire. Might be a good show for you to watch in the future.

I’m struggling with this show. I can appreciate that the show is really well done but just finding it to depressing. There’s so little positive that redeems all the negativity.
Part of it is probably that I’m a parent myself and I strongly believe that the lack of freedom kids have these days does more harm than good. But the show is just such an extreme and sensationalized version of the teen years that it almost feels like fear-mongering to me.
