Kaylee is worried = so he is big brotherish and speaks to her calmly - but recognized her gift when the first met & added her to the crew in an instant(even though he already had a mechanic); he is more aggressive with Wash because his loyalties are being split between Zoe and Serenity and Wash is more beta than alpha. Reads Jayne instantly & knows how not to get shot & add a tracker/muscle to the crew. - Fun tidbit: Gina Torres was getting married and needed time off, so this the story they came up with to provide the days off.
