I've been trying to find a way to articulate this right, but I love this show because it feels like we're watching the origin story of a comic book villain, but without any of the other trappings of the genre.
There's this quietly intense energy just humming below the surface at all times. We know Saul is coming, the show knows we're waiting for him, but it's going to take the time it needs to show exactly how Jimmy gets to that point, and it's going to wring as much drama and tension out of that wait as it can.
When the switch does come, its not going to be some fun reveal. I think it's going to be deeply tragic. Which is why I find this show so remarkable: that it took Breaking Bad's slimy, comic relief character, and it built around him one of the best character studies I've had the pleasure to watch.
I guess what I'm saying is that, while the world does not need more superhero content, if James Gunn was able to get Vince Gilligan do make a show around a Batman villain, I would not complain.

Saul hurting Howard was not part of his plan when it came to the insurance. It's just convenient for him to repress his sadness to shift the blame onto Howard, because Howard doesn't know the full story and is open to take the full blame. It's definitely not some kind of closure thing for Jimmy, because deep down he does feel regret. And it most definitely is an excuse for Jimmy to feel better. It's true that Jimmy tries to seperate his Saul persona from himself, but in the end that doesn't make him any better than Walter. It's a major denial red flag.

deeply strange show, high highs and low lows... but tatiana maslany is an icon. I wish I enjoyed She-Hulk (or any MCU stuff) more.

Great reaction. Loved the discussion at the end. imo reaction viewers often really struggle to understand the "first watch as A Job but on camera for an audience" context of reactions. Good to keep in mind.
Lydia: "You are now my 'Security Consultant' 😉" Mike sat at home bored: "and I took that personally". it's counter-intuitive but Mike making Madrigal's US faciltiies safer / more secure = making Lydia and Gus' secret little operation more secure lol
My take on Chuck is pretty simple and basically what Arianna says... when he realised he can no longer practice law, doesn't have his ex-wife and just burned his final bridge with Jimmy by saying he doesnt care about him (LIE!!!) he has literally nothing left to live for and would rather self-immolate than struggle to get better for "nothing" (not what I believe btw, there's always a reason to try). deeply sad end to a deeply complex character. we focus a lot on the men - jimmy, kim, chuck + their law peers, but Kim must be feeling a share of the blame too. I don't think any of them would have done what they did if they knew it would domino-effect into Chuck's death, not even Jimmy at his worst.
for the record I do think Jimmy feels bad here. I just think it's easy to push that bad feeling down and pretend like howard did it. my read is less "psychopath evil" and more "willfully ignorant", oopsy, howard got chuck killed and chuck said he didnt care about me so 🤷

IMO Hollywood has an aversion to casting brown men with accents in leading roles. Pedro Pascal is only "Pedro Pascal" because he got the Game of Thrones role where he was playing "suave foreigner with an accent (that isnt his own)", now he's everywhere with his natural american accent. Diego Luna was relatively unknown until Star Wars. I think Mando is swimming upstream against a casting culture that would never think to put him up for lead, or even side characters. Which is a shame because he's incredible.

I guess Orphan Black is the other big one. It's the only other thing I've seen him in.

I think that’s just to indicate that it was Rebecca’s old sheet music since she was in orchestra. I don’t think we’d met her yet by that episode, so this may have been the show’s way of hinting at her existence. The piece is actually Sicilienne, Op.78, by Gabriel Fauré

Yeah, I think this is just deep denial and repression. It’s not a flip of the switch getting Jimmy to Saul. It was just a couple weeks ago he ruined his shot at a million dollar settlement to make an old lady feel better.
Saul is ultimately a social mask and coping mechanism for Jimmy. It’s not that Jimmy doesn’t feel bad, it’s that he can’t allow himself to feel *anything* about Chuck now because it would utterly destroy him to have a real moment of internal reflection.
Walt was a character trying to convince himself that he’s not as bad as he really is, whereas Jimmy is a character slowly becoming complacent with the idea that he’s *worse* than he really is. But I don’t think there’s an ounce of true pleasure in finding out the role he played here. This is just complete numbness and an inappropriately pleasant facade.

It's kinda weird - Michael Mando's such a great actor but aside from Better Call Saul he's only been a small handful of roles.
The big one he's known for is voicing and doing mocap for Vaas Montenegro in the game Far Cry 3, who's often called one of the best villains in gaming.

Woah. I was gonna comment about something else after watching this episode, but someone else beat me to it, so instead I'll just super appreciate how you ended this. A lot of people need pep talks, especially right now. For lots of reasons. So, thank you, for your care and support. I know that's usually something a content creator says, not a content receiver, but this is why a lot of us are here. It feels nice to be appreciated, reciprocally. For real, nice outro to a tough episode. Anyway, on to 4-2!

Michael Mando (Nacho) was in Orphan Black I think. Great show, it was on Canadian BBC or something like that. Tatiana Maslany was fantastic in it!

Much love to Ernie and Omar. But, speaking of Badger and Skinny, the banter in the breakroom scene with Mike at Madrigal was very much like Badger pitching a Star Trek episode to Skinny Pete, just replaced by corporate jock guys talking about a theoretical fight. Not saying I like those guys, I just like the similar conversation styles. It's fun from a writing style perspective.

Damn, that's what I was going to say! Yes, it's the piece that Chuck plays with the metronome. And it appears that it was an original composition written by Rebecca, because her name was written on the composition.

Jimmy acted happy at the end *because* he knows for sure that it's his fault. The guilt of Chuck's death affects him openly because he doesn't know what's happened, but once he finds out that it's 100% his actions which have led to this, it's a level of guilt he can only repress and pretend that it is in fact actually Howard's fault. But of course, the guilt will come out of him in other directions.
