Better Call Saul 2x4

Comments

I completely agree with you, when the show was airing, I thought it was so easy to be on Chucks side. Chuck says it himself in an earlier episode, he loves the law, he dedicated his entire life to it and following all the rules that come with practicing the law. Jimmy just completely disregards the rules at every turn. Hell there was a switch in a previous episode that had tape that said "Keep on" and Jimmy saw it, and then turned it off for a little bit before he turned it back on, just going to show Jimmy complete lack of respect for even basic rules. Chuck suffers the same treatment that Skyler got in BB for the same reason. They stood opposed to the main character getting their way.

this is my exact argument against Chuck's moralism. Jimmy scammed a few people with slip n falls and in the eps we've seen has done some rule-breaking stuff, but HHM has probably inflicted more net harm on the world by protecting evil corporations. If Sandpiper Crossing was HHM's client, they would be fighting just as hard to discredit at-risk elderly plaintiffs lol, and Chuck would think its ethically fine because they have a responsibility to their client. It's not like HHM is some charity non-profit.

Kara

Yeah, when you think about the kind of large scale damage that certain corporations get away with inflicting on the world, it becomes clear that “respectable firms” are behind some of the most egregious wrongs ever committed. I’m sure whatever firm represented Purdue Pharma would be considered respectable, despite the thousands of man hours they put into effectively purchasing the Sackler family’s immunity in a million wrongful deaths.

But word of mouth *is* a form of advertising. It’s just a form that mostly benefits the already established. It ends up being that the people most granted promotion are those least in need of it. Howard’s whole “basking in the glow” of the news coverage (as if the public has any need to know who the lawyers were in that case) is unpaid advertising and nothing more. A ban on advertising would be a lot more fair if the lawyer’s identities and specific cases were shielded like the identities of jurors are. But the truth is people want to know and lawyers want to tell them. Whether they tell them by injecting themselves in front of a news camera or paying for a 30 second tv spot is not really a distinction that makes a difference. Now that I think about it, the fact that HHM has a trademarked logo and Jimmy doesn’t suggests Chuck’s firm has engaged in more overt advertising than Jimmy has at the point in the story where Chuck is giving Jimmy a hard time about billboards.

Eric Wall

Lawyers come in many shapes and sizes and flavors. Davis and Main is "respectable," but what does that mean? That they have wealthy corporate clients funding them and they don't want to undermine that trust. Fine. I'm sure they do great work for those clients. The people we've seen Jimmy represent so far in the show are more or less powerless folk who Davis & Main and HHM wouldn't notice or care about if they passed them lying in the gutter. We see these results in our "justice" system, which sticks poor arrestees with PD's who are underpaid, underfunded, overworked, and may be representing dozens of clients at a time. But I guess poor people who commit crimes are the worst of the worst, right? And if a lawyer is willing to represent them, that lawyer must be scum and to be disrespected.

He looks like himself easy to spot

The real give away that it was Krazy-8 is that he was wearing a shirt with "Tampico Furniture" logo on it. What makes him a bit harder to spot is that the actor, Max Arciniega, was just 21 when he appeared in BB and almost 30 in BCS, yet for some f'd-up reason, he looks significantly younger in the latter. When I first saw this episode in 2016 I double-taked as well, thinking that they had cast his younger brother since this is set ~6 years before the events of BB.

oh my god... Jimmy McGill would have a million+ subs on TikTok. There are literally defence lawyers who post their clients getting off already lol, its like "she was being charged with 6 counts of disorderly drunk driving, i managed to get her time served and 1 week rehab" and the person is like "thanks so much! cant wait to drink drive again!"

Kara

I never doubted! but clocking the vietnam reference bodes very well for other "show dont tell" stuff

Kara

mike really hit cranked up salamanca with the "im just a widdle guy, you wouldnt rob a guy on his birthday would ya?"

Kara

when Maple dropped the "oh jeez guys, come on!" i felt that

Kara

Great reaction. Arianna is the first reactor I remember seeing instantly clock Krazy-8 (Domingo, here). I guess BB is a lot more recent for y'all but still great work. Makes the universe feel more big and real. "Mike is so good at pinpointing people's predictabilities" omg so true Maple!! and this is what gets him in the end, cuz he fails to predict Walt who is a chaos agent, the fly buzzing around the lab. Tuco's actor Raymond Cruz said that playing Tuco was giving him serious mental health issues and I believe it 💀 I love this sort of complex "both sides have good points stuff". I'm no centrist irl but in fiction its so fun to have complex, real feeling character dynamics + conflicts. Chuck is the epitome of the "Devestating: the worst person you know has a great point" onion article.

Kara

my firm has never advertised. all word of mouth and corporate clients

Chris Bruneau

I can sorta see the argument for it. Big firms and big names already have free advertising via word of mouth and appearing in the news. It feels very gatekeepery for a lawyer arguing in front of the Supreme Court to tell someone just starting out that being a proper lawyer means nobody hears their name on TV, meanwhile *everyone* hears *their* name on TV.

Eric Wall

This might be an unpopular opinion, but in that argument between Chuck and Jimmy, I am completely on Chuck's side. I don't think I was on my first viewing but hindsight does a lot on this show... At the beginning of the argument when Jimmy revealed that Kim didn't know the whole story about the commercial, Chuck definitely got defensive, probably because he realized that he and Howard had probably been too harsh with Kim and I think he was annoyed with Jimmy for putting him in that position. So he threw some blows around that were definitely below the belt. Afterwards though, when he told Jimmy he was like an alcoholic that refuses to admit he's got a problem, I think that perspective was pretty spot-on. And he was also right that Jimmy kept making this punishment about himself when it honestly kind of wasn't. You can still argue that her punishment was petty and over-the-top but it really wasn't at all about Jimmy, more about Howard's ego. Chuck also, to his credit, stands his moral ground here when Jimmy offers him this deal about quitting the law (which was probably insincere anyway) even though that actually is what Chuck personally wants. Chuck does have principles even if his judgment is often clouded by his resentfulness towards Jimmy. Jimmy, more and more as he morphs into Saul, doesn't have any principles. He's not evil-hearted or malicious but that's about all that keeps him from being even more ruthless. It's his conscience, not his moral principles. The show does a good job of keeping us rooting for Jimmy even when we probably shouldn't just by making Chuck such a detestable asshole ^^'

Christophe

I agree with Arianna, Chuck IS a jerk face 😂

X

Mike played Tuco like a fiddle. "Aw, come on guys, keep it friendly" haha

Joe Blankenship

I love that you both truly see why what Jimmy did was bad even if you still sympathize with his actions. I think many people don't truly get why Cliff was mad because they haven't really worked in that type of company. Things are sometimes bigger than just you and your project.

Adam Vialpando

Girls, nice catch on Krazy-8, tuco's necklace, AND the gun dealer!! you both have a sharp eye for detail. :)

Chris Bruneau

The thing is that large firms like D&M don't really NEED to chase clients like that. More respectable firms have less clients but usually they keep those clients for years, even decades. And those clients, the ones that truly form the backbone of agencies like that, usually expect a certain level of respectability and professionalism. Saul got away with it because he represented truly the worst of the worst and didn't care.

Adam Vialpando

God it's so refreshing to watch this show with intelligent, observant people. Recognizing the gun dealer and Krazy-8, picking up on the fact that Mike was in Vietnam—none of these are exactly subtle but you'd be amazed for how many people it just goes right over their head. Also recognizing the nuance in Jimmy's actions and their morality, and not just throwing yourself to one side or the other, just great.

Christophe

Reputable attorneys do not advertise. It's used to be against the rules of Professional Conduct as solicitation--but now it's common place

Chris Bruneau

Jimmy would've fit right in with our social media world, my god his guerilla ad campaigns and likeability would make him the most successful lawyer in the country. He'd be on talk shows as the designated Hollywood lawyer. 30 million followers easy. All the most memorable and successful lawyer commercials are wacky as hell, he made the wrong choice to run the commercial but Davis and Main missed out on a revolution, things could've been different 😔 You might as well not buy advertising spots if you aren't trying to grab people.
