Better Call Saul 2x3

Comments

I think there’s also some learned avoidance habits going on. He’s so use to Chuck and others telling him no, that he simply doesn’t trust Cliff enough to show him. He always has Chuck’s voice in the back of his head telling him all the reasons he’s a screw up, so he just wants to prove it *will* work up front without having to subject himself to other people’s judgments about his abilities.

Eric Wall

Chuck has sometimes been compared to Skyler in Breaking Bad; he is also the foil to our protagonist, the wrench in their schemes. But, at least for like the first 3 seasons, Skyler was just 100% in the right. It could be annoying because she would get in the way of Walt doing his cool thing which we wanted to see, but she was mostly just simply right, both morally and factually. Chuck is much more morally gray than Skyler but he essentially fills a similar role. We get annoyed at him because he stands in Jimmy's way, stands in the way of him doing his thing, and Jimmy's schemes and plots seem both more entertaining and less harmful than Walt's ever were, so we dismiss Chuck and want him to stop being a nuisance. Of course, where Skyler mostly wanted to stop Walt for good reasons, for moral reasons, Chuck does it mostly for personal vendetta, because he's jealous of Jimmy's charm and his ease of persuasion and he's resentful of the possibility of people seeing Jimmy as Chuck's peer because he thinks that he's worked harder for his position (which in fairness, he has). But all of that, all the bitter undertones, all the ways in which Jimmy often seems to be right, at least emotionally, doesn't change the fact that Chuck is often spot-on about Jimmy and can see through him better than anyone else. Jimmy going to Amarillo and doing this whole song-and-dance for the seniors in the bus wasn't how you're supposed to do it; it was questionable at the very least legally and maybe even morally. At any rate, Chuck's not wrong that Schweikart & Cokeley could very well look for any angle to weaken HHM and Davis & Main's position. And possible solicitation could be very damaging for their side, and if so, what did Jimmy truly achieve then? Jimmy's always looking for the quick fix, looking for what gives him the biggest edge in the short run, and damn the long-term consequences. And all he wanted was to be able to brag at that meeting, possibly even to Chuck specifically (because he still craves his approval) and he wasn't content with just being another cog in the machine, just doing the job he was supposed to without exceeding expectations. Same with the TV commercial. He just wanted to show off and didn't want to risk not getting Cliff's approval. Plus, he also loves pulling off these schemes, he gets excitement and a feeling of superiority out of it, so there's also always a selfish motivation for him to do these things and then he rationalizes it afterwards with his success.

This episode is such a slow-motion car crash to rewatch. Every time, I keep hoping Jimmy will take the extra five minutes to show the tape to his boss in advance.

"Autumn would tear that toy apart." Lies! Autumn is a good dog and has never been convicted of any crimes!

Liesmith

Lol yes, very much so. Thats today. Thanks for entertaining me with your reaction anyway. I felt that energy.

TinCan Cosmanaut

No lol you know that tired after working your full time job and your days off you end up having to work too 😂 that's about where we are at

Chad Gloria

Maple starts by saying “I’m so sleepy” Then Ariana reacts to her phone a bit later, saying “Yup it’s 6 o’clock” Are you guys watching this in the AM?

TinCan Cosmanaut

I like how they used the old lady's stair lift for their improvised dolly. Really made it look like a professional ad.

Saul just has such a tough time working under people who will stifle his style. That's just not the kind of person he is, even if it can get him the apartment, car, and girl. And Im pretty sure that pink pig is what Mike uses to distract the assassin that Lydia sends at him.

Joshua Luzania

Very good!! Saved me from a post!

Two admittedly completely pointless and irrelevant references to Breaking Bad in this episode: The toy pig is the same (or at least the same model) as the one Mike used when he was hunting down that kind of untrustworthy Chinese mafia guy they had working for them. He used the pig to cause the distraction at the peephole so the assassin wouldn't know what was going on outside the door. Don't know what the connection would be there or why Kaylee's toy pig would show up on that front porch but there it is. Also the movie they were watching at the end was, as mentioned by Kim, Ice Station Zebra from 1968. Ice Station Zebra Associates is what Saul later names his holding company used to launder Walt and Skyler's money.

Great reaction! I'm also a big fan of "ask for forgiveness, not permission" but maaaaybe not at a law firm where you know they're really strict rule followers, after your girlfriend(?) who put her reputation on the line asked you to not break the rules for a minute. I love how juicy the drama is like you can usually always see both sides and you wanna root for jimmy even when he acts like how chuck describes him. I think Stacey just hallucinated the gunshots based off the newspaper sounds + mysterious "bullet marks" (just facade chips?) due to PTSD. Her husband didn't get killed that long ago and she's mostly alone in a new city, in a not-great neighbourhood. she's probably been dreaming about mikey getting shot every night for months 😔. Very interesting to imagine how Mike goes from here, where he's turning down money cuz he doesn't want to hurt people, to Breaking Bad.
