Here’s a terribly nerdy question in response to your auto formatting gripes: for writing I assume you guys are ultimately putting whatever you write into some kind of html so it can be posted; why not use markdown or latex (via overleaf) instead of word? Markdown in particular is almost wysiwyg but it’s also text, and can be converted to html or pdf pretty automatically. Boo Word/docs!

2025-08-06 16:14:10 +0000 UTCI'm an editor who shares your Google Docs pain, Edd! My one tip would be to show non-printing characters (it's an option in the View dropdown) – lots of sneaky formatting gremlins suddenly become visible and make troubleshootable sense.
