That was a completely reflexive action, he did it as naturally as taking a breath, since killing any unknown pigeon on sight was common practice during WWI to prevent the enemy from sending messages.

Her husband Damian Lewis (who famously played Major Winters on Band of Bros) said: "Very, very few people knew of her illness before her death as she did not want her illness to overshadow her professional and charitable work." She worked right to the end -- a consummate professional. She died from breast cancer at age 52, such a damn shame. :(
