Breaking Bad 5x1

HARSH???? on WALTER WHITE????

Skye Brooklyn

I was feeling the same way, but in a different way, I was really anxious and waiting for this part of the season because now is when everything starts to change. Walt's character is now somehow different (like Kara said "goofy as hell, terrifying his Wife and Lawyer, and thinking he's unbeatable". Anyway, I was hoping to find the same thing, some kind of retribution from the girls, and it happened. In the last episode, both understood the level of strategy that Walt played. I'm excited to see how this is going to twist their vision of Walt, and I know I'm not going to be disappointed.

BB is far better than Better call Saul

Justin

For Breaking Bad, the writers outline each season as they go. This is different than some rooms where they have an outline for a full series (like Mr Robot) from the start. Since 5 was split into two parts, they outlined each part separately (they're basically separate seasons, production-wise). This is why the seasons feel so different, like S1 to S5 is a huge change, or why some plots lose focus over time as the writers figure out what they want to do + aren't beholden to epic 5 season plans. It's a unique way of doing things but BB is great and BCS is even better, so I trust this crew to do anything lol. I think Mad Men was done the same way too. I hope they make more stuff together some day.

Kara

You using mansplain is fucking stupid. He gave his opinion in a respectful manner, stop being a d bag and come up with a genuinely compelling counter next time. Also, Gus literally used a kid and then watched on as that kid was shot to death haha. That same guy also threatened to murder an infant. So that moral argument immediately falls apart under any kind of scrutiny. It is definitely hypocritical to praise Gus as some kind of incredible mastermind and hold him up some kind of moral improvement over Walt. The guy was did worse things than Walt did but was beloved for it. So I don't get how the guy is wrong for saying they are harsh on Walt in comparison

Zane Platt

You're definitely not prepared for this season, and I apologize for being excited about this. The only final season in recent memory that made me feel even half as stressed was the last season of Succession. Anyways thanks for the reactions. It's been fun from the start. Just bringing it up since it's my first comment, and it'll be the only time I mention it, but one of my favorite things is to see everyone's own takes on Walt as a character, and the fact that the spectrum is so wide from full support to complete disdain (and everything in the middle) speaks to his quality as an anti-hero. Point being not to let anyone tell you that your opinions of him are wrong. (or right) Genuine ask by the way, I'm open to any suggestions for newer shows with a heavy character-driven focus.

BoundTo

Yep, they did them both from Season 1, the bit about melting a body through the bathtub and the big sodium fulminate boom where Walt shows up Tuco.

@Chris Yup. Vince mentioned it in some 1-on-1 interviews as well as special group interviews with the writer's room. Vince also said he got panic attacks during the last season of filming, afraid he'd get in a car accident or something and be unable to complete this masterpiece.

Dan

Funny you mention Mythbusters lol. The Mythbusters guys did an entire Breaking Bad episode with the creator Vince Gilligan and Aaron Paul (Jesse)! Great watch!

Dilly Diamondz

There are 16 episodes in Season 5. The season was split into 8 episodes when it originally aired (5A & 5B), with the 11-month wait in-between, which was unbearable for the reasons you'll understand once you have seen 5x8.

Andrew

Yeah I was shocked when I heard it

Justin

Is that really true about the writers had no idea where the M60 thing was going? I never heard that!

Chris Bruneau

Na Walt just knows his plans work

Justin

my stummy hurt

Justin

also, whats with the shirts?

Chris Bruneau

I just love the switch. Walt always was an unhinged maniac, but now he isn't just an impotent clown, he is actually the top dog in town. A known murderer. With an ego complex and a desperate need to be known for his genius. No one knew Gus because he didn't have an ego. Walt doesn't work like that.

Ullrich Pfeiffer

In the text of the show, Walt is high off his win over Gus, saying the plan worked "cuz I say so" which is goofy as hell, terrifying his Wife and Lawyer, and thinking he's unbeatable... all after we see a flashforward where he's dishevelled w/ hair, popping pills, using a fake ID and buying a massive gun. The text of the show literally wants you to connect these dots.

Kara

well girls, you did say you wanted Walt to be the Bad guy--be careful what you wish for...... and we begin the final season: "look upon my works, ye might, and despair!!!"

Chris Bruneau

Hopefully, the chicas have already found out but they'll be very happy to know there are 16 episodes in the season, not 8.

Justin Calhoun

It'll never be as good as watching it the first time but it is damn close with your guys' reactions. This season is gonna be a damn blast!

Justin Calhoun

too much hate for Walt? He is literally a murderer who also poisoned a child...and that's only so far . Pretty sure they don't need someone to mansplain how they should feel when reacting.

Bealzabozo time

If we're thinking of the same thing, those small metal bins that the bacon sits in is called a six-pan lol

Okay, I get it you guys are more against Walt than Skyler, but saying that Walt lies pushed her to get a job, bang her boss and cook his books is reaching to say the least. And later on, once again Walt's lies forced her to take the money her husband earned, that she was trusted with and gave it to the same boss she cheated on him with and helped to commit tax fraud is a laughable position. It's just an insanely bad take, and I'm not a Walt d*ck rider. I don't think he is the coolest or he is morally right. Same with the laptop, before the magnet idea, you guys did nothing but mock Walt, like: "you are not batman, come on what you're gonna do?". They together figure out a solution and silence. But at the end it comes back again: "I bet Hank has the laptop" or "oh you didn't know it worked". I'm not trying to convince anyone to change their mind or positions, but I think your guys' hate towards Walt is a bit too much. An episode ago he just outplayed the guy you rather appropriately nicknamed daddy Gus, cause he was so badass and smart. But it's like never happened, no props to him, no faith in anything he comes up with. Not here to hate, still enjoy most of what you guys do.

Csaba Simon

You did ask to see Walt embrace how bad he is. Be careful what you wish for...

Munir

Great reaction. People who worked with Steve Jobs coined the term "reality distortion field" to describe the effect he had on himself and others and with Gus gone Walt is fully in the distortion field here. Gus had a deep sense of controlled menace but Walt is scarier in a different way, it really feels like he could do anything even self-destructive and somehow be lucky enough to pull it off. I think it says a lot that Saul who has seen Walt at his lowest / most pathetic is still genuinely scared of him, because he really could do anything, he could blow the entire op up, poison you + lie to your face about it. And the whole time he would unironically believe he's doing 'the right thing'. It's an incredible trick, to be able to say something untrue and believe it yourself. 'Reality distortion field'. I laughed when Maple said Walt destroyed everyone's lives in like 6 months... girl for real. How many years did it take Gus to put together this operation? 20? Obliterated by one goofy chemistry teacher. Another channel described Walt as "the fly, buzzing into the place and ruining everything". lmao.

Kara

And starts the greatest season in television history. Vince believed in writing the character's stories as they went along instead of start to finish. They'd back a character into a corner organically and then spend hrs & hrs in the writing room figuring ways they could make an out. At the time of shooting this episode they had no plan for how the M60 gun from the cold open would make it's return to the story. The fact that they can just sprinkle in tools to a scene whether it's objects or a character's lines or even a whole story plot as they go and then come back to them full circle in such a clever & holistic way makes it feel as if it was all planned from the start. Part of the magic of this show.
