"[T]hey'd never cold-bloodedly kill a hurt person just to save themselves." <-- Agreed.
At times it seems the show uses loosely analogous situations in order to highlight the *differences* between how certain people act and how the boys would (or have) acted. 👍
I think it was @Christopher simeon (please forgive me if I'm misquoting) who directed a comment to a video some weeks or months ago that "not everything is a parallel."

I absolutely love this episode, one of my faves of the season. This was the first episode that was directed by Nina Lopez-Corrado who went on to direct 5 more episodes. I think she did such a beautiful job creating the tension and feeling of non-stop action throughout the episode.
I'll throw in my 2 cents and say, I'm one of those people who love the codependent relationship between Sam and Dean, within reason of course. Their relationship and unswerving love for each other is one of the things I love most about the show, and that's just never gonna change for me.
I do wish Dean would value his life more, and know his worth more. But the day he stops risking everything to save Sam is the day he's no longer Dean, imo. I wish he'd think plans out better before going through with them, but I LOVE how much he loves Sam. What can I say? 🤷🏼♀️😏
But having said that, there is NO way either Sam or Dean would EVER murder an innocent, ailing, human being. They may have made tough decisions that brought about hard consequences (8x23 and 10x23) but they'd never cold-bloodedly kill a hurt person just to save themselves.
Also, I don't think Dean was "suicidal" here, (not saying he's never had thoughts like that throughout the show, because he has, 2x09 and 5x18 being the closest examples.) But in this case, I think he needed to talk to Billie and knew the only way she'd come was if he was dead or dying. As SKK mentioned above, he did the same in 6x11 and it worked. So he probably figured it was worth trying again. He did make a contingency plan for getting back, telling Michelle to get the Doc to bring him back if she could. So he wasn't just trying to "end it all cause Sam was dead", he was trying as he always does to make sure Sam could go on living. And I agree with Kit too, that while his motivations to bring Sam back were definitely motivated largely by his inability to lose his son, he also thinks Sam is the only one who can take on Amara, so in the end I think he figured it would be for the greater good too.
Oh, and also, Michelle had a sneaking suspicion, that became stronger as time went on, but she didn't actually see what Corbin had done to Sam.
And Sam is a fucking beast in this episode and deserves all the claps!! 👏🏼😍👏🏼
