Breaking Bad 3x9

Maple is absolutely right about A-Aron Paul. His monologs are amazing. Such a talent. The only thing that sucks for him is it's sooooo hard to play anything else good after such an iconic role.

Kafkaesk is waking up as a beatle lying on its back, barely able to move, thats how Gregor Samsa would describe it.

PudelNudel

I love the fly, and I predict the girls will too!!

Chris Bruneau

Think Arianna got a taste of that blue this episode, she on fire!

sablo

Don't get down about the next episode, it will quickly pick back up after episode 10 lol

OMG, Office space is the ultimate film example of Kafkaesque--the bizarre, inane world of being a mindless cog in a machine--should have thought of that yesterday!!!!

Chris Bruneau

he won 3 emmys for this show--A fabulous actor!!!!

Great reaction! Totally agree with what Maple said re: Skyler. To build on that, if Skyler "does the right thing" and goes to the police at any point then Walt gets arrested / killed, the family is broken, Hank maybe loses job (DEA agent with drug-dealing brother in law? oof), all the money gets taken by the government etc. imo her choice is between keeping her family together however she can, and breaking her family apart forever. She made a lot of decisions I wouldn't have made but also I've never been in that situation 🤷 It's fun rewatching and seeing Aaron Paul really come into his own this season. Great character/performance.

This year is also the 100th anniversary of Kafka's death - hood opportunity to re-read some of his works... it's been a while. I really liked what I read when we learned about him at school, so I dove in and quickly became deeply engrossed by his works. There's a few short "fables" and stories in there as well. "Before the Law" might be the most famous (though I confess I don't how how good the translations are).

Michael Bauer

Yeah, it's striking. I don't know why, but it also scares me a bit 😅 It somehow looks... more stern?

Michael Bauer

Look at Arianna. Absolutely gorgeous today! Her partner is a lucky partner! Lol. Also, can't wait for you two to get further and loving re watching with you two! Muah!

Zech

Yall should read The Metamorphosis, it's good.

I was lucky enough to study existentialism in high school. What better time to discuss the meaning of life with my classmates. Frank Kafka is one that we studied. Here's a nice little paragraph that helps you to understand the term "Kafkaesque": "While Kafka's personal beliefs are not extensively documented, his writings suggest a deep sense of existential despair and a questioning of the meaning and purpose of human existence. His works often depict individuals caught in bureaucratic systems beyond their control, facing absurd and inexplicable circumstances."

Terri

for non-literary people, such as myself, here is a great example of Kafka: (from NYT) "The process of applying for a green card while living in the U.S. is a Kafkaesque one, and, during the time that the application is being processed, you are not allowed to leave the country."

Ikr the thumbnail alone made me jump back in confusion . Crazy how much eye color does

off topic, but did anyone else notice how different Arianna looks with those new contact lenses???-its quite striking!

Chris Bruneau

I laugh when Walter leans in to listen to Skyler's tale. This show sets up a lot for future eps.

"I respect the strategy, in your position, I would have done the same". 🔥 No music necessary, just the sound of Walt's creaking chair, in a room way out in the desert- just the two of them. The tension is building up between Walt & Gus. You can see the gears turning in both their heads in that scene. It feels pivotal. Walt seems desperate, laying out all his cards to Gus like he's in a panic and doesn't know what to do with himself ever since he got a real look into Gus's high iq plays. Gus places his food platter in the middle of two tables put together- far from both their reach... Is the food really necessary? He knows neither of them will touch it. It almost symbolizes life and in order for Walt to acquire it he must reach out and become vulnerable to Gus- cross Gus. Like the whole idea of a handshake and reaching out your arm to show vulnerability and trustworthiness. Gus provided Walt the platter, not the other way around. Funny since Walt is asking Gus for security for his life. (there's always a food platter at Gus's meetings like with Juan, the cousins & Hector, as a symbol of authority. The life giver/taker like at his food chain he gives life) Gus breaks down and his sinister side becomes more apparent as Walt exposes him. Half their faces being lit and the other half in the dark- showing their two-sidedness. Walt's shadow on his right side (right side being correct, moral) with his sinister half bright in full display. While Gus's sinister side being kept in the shadows. Gus makes a mockery of Walt flashing numbers in front of him which just feels like gaslighting to the audience, maybe to Walt too. Overall it's safe to say the scene feels very Kafkaesque!
