It makes some sense if you read why. They had announced when season 2 was releasing, then ran into issues with the production of the latter half, whatever that was we don't know. They decided to release the first four as it had already been two and a half years since season 1 and didn't want to completely miss their promised release window for 2. I doubt they'll do this again, and season 3 should be out faster.

Each episode, barring the last 2, had fairly self contained stories with the alien invasion, Mars, the criminal enterprise takeover/betrayal, and college cyborgs being separate things from episodes 2-6. I think the difference is the whole secret with Nolan was such a compelling and concrete through line. This season that through line is much more vague with "what is Nolan and/or the Viltrumites doing and are they coming?" looming and the introduction of the whole multiverse villain thing. I personally still enjoyed this season, but am disappointed in the odd structuring of it. I would've waited the extra months to just have everything release consecutively than this mid season finale type thing they did. That doesn't really work for 8 episodes seasons compared to longer shows.
