In the samurai code of feudal Japan, the topknot represented the samurai's allegiance and loyalty to their Lord. The topknot was cut when a samurai became lordless, either by leaving them, or upon the lord's death. Zuko and Iroh severed their ties and loyalty to the Fire Lord by doing that.
