Existence requires a certain amount of being numb to the truth in order to operate. Being this sober about life would be debilitating. MM prob needed therapy after playing this character.

Based on a true story early in the epidemic, when even many/most doctors were treating them horribly and there was no approved treatment. A lot of stigma, fear of it being easily contagious by touch etc. Its a very good movie, though from what I remember also hard to watch at times.
