It seems like the high table is more a parent organization uniting various lower tier crime organizations, such as the Camorra (mentioned in ch2) or wicks upbringing the Ruska Roma. Those organizations my have their own standards but they are expected to always be subordinate to the high table. Wicks problem was not completing his marker. It was going after the brother and killing him in the continental violating their various rules. They definitely stretched the limits of logic on this one that possibly over complicated it some.

Bubba Fett

Tactical fanboy. Lol.

As others have said you have to suspend your disbelief and enjoy the world class action scenes and embrace the awesomeness of the idea of a society of assassins while we go about our hum drum lives. I consider this a fantasy and logic cannot be applied to fantasy. The only logic is the logic of the the world that the story is based in.

Hahaha

Glenn Wiggam

Lol I'm glad someone did.

I love every second of Ariana’s reaction to this

John Rando

Having said all this, I love your reactions and look forward to them.

I’ve heard the John Wick franchise described as “Harry Potter for grownups”: it’s a magical amazing world right under our noses, parallel to our own. There are muggles who are mixed in and all around, even though this world is right under our noses, we are unaware of it, and the practitioners are capable of feats that we cannot match. Personally, I like this approach, as it allows for just getting lost in this world and enjoying it. I’m sorry you got so wrapped around your axle over a logic point that robbed you of sitting back and enjoying the movie. Even more unfortunate, I think your dissatisfaction stemmed from a misunderstanding: “If John Wick was fulfilling a marker (which is required), why was he being punished for doing something he was only supposed to do?” I *think* that was your issue? As I understood it however, John Wick fulfilled his marker, and then was double-crossed by the marker holder (because he was a greedy craven power-hungry dick), and John killed him. The wrath of the High Table was not because John killed the holder of the marker, but because he did so on the neutral, off-limits grounds of the Continental. Two separate deals.

It was definitely way too much going on. And the High Table rules are irrational and contradictory. Maybe it was to say that the at the end of the day none of the rules matter as long as fear and loyalty are shown. And the chef was a pain every time he opened his mouth, though it did seem like they were poking fun at every tacticool fanboy who thinks that if they were in this universe that they too would be a peer and "pal" of the one and only John Wick.

Honestly I see these movies as incredibly well made theme park rides of choreography and action. The world building is a cherry on top but it’s really just a vehicle to watch some of the best stunt work put on screen.

You’re totally allowed to have your opinion and your feelings are valid (everyone feels differently about things) so don’t worry that you express yourself. From my perspective, the writing is clearly less strong in the sequels but I’m fine suspending my disbelief (like I do with comic book movies and most action/disaster films… i.e. How does Bruce Willis survive the Die Hards, Bill Paxton survive the tornado, etc. etc.). The “ticket” was something within the Russian organization whereas the Marker is specifically High Table so I think we’re supposed to let that go. The tonal shift for the sushi chef is jarring and inconsistent, as are a number of things but I’m just here for the action and enjoy the dips into the underworld we take. I think lowering story/script expectations and being surprised if it does improve is the best approach … because the action is fantastic and gets me coming back.
