I think we saw at least 3-4 versions of Dean crammed in here so I am glad the calm, collected version of Sam took the trials on. Pretty sure Crowley was a stickler for integrity like last season where he destroyed the crossroad demon who messed with Becky and others but who can keep be expected to remember that? But so much gets lost after gaining what season 7 destroyed so it's still getting there.

Dean just puts himself down…but there’s a reason that everyone takes to Dean so much and he had been hunting on his own for years also. Sam def book smart and loves to read and research and stuff. Deans street smart and hunter smart from experience. They’re both a good mix of both and I feel like that’s so clear! I love them!

There’s no subtext about not wanting to hook up with elly…. That’s why he’s taking deep breaths to turn her down … he’s been staring at her since they got there .

2023-09-10 07:21:32 +0000 UTCI couldn’t remember what season the boys learned about the Men of Letters and got to the bunker. When I saw the title for “As Time Goes By” I got excited. I was so happy for both of them to have their own rooms and space and to have their own home base with all the books Sam could ever need.

The only quibble I have with season 8 in general, and this episode in particular is what you addressed, how cavalier some of Dean’s dialogue was. I believe that they were trying to convey Dean’s normal false bravado when he’s frightened, but it didn’t all land there for me. But one of the very best things (IMO) is The Bunker. If you’ll remember, one of the conversations we saw John have with Sam and Dean, he said “I want you to go back to school. I want Dean to have a home,” In the Bunker, I hope they found both of those things - plus I love the fact that it came to them through John. Take care.

2021-10-20 22:23:05 +0000 UTCI'm hoping this will be good for Sam. He kinda needs to be the one doing the trials, moreso than Dean. I think Sam still suffers from knowing he 1) trusted Ruby; 2) opened Lucifer's cage; 3) trauma of his soul being trapped with Lucifer for so long.

2021-10-20 18:15:43 +0000 UTCEllie really gave dean the "last time on earth" speech lmao, free to be you on me is forever on my mind, this is a great episode, dean is a mom, he's always been, he had to, he was a mother, a father & a big brother for sam for all his life, in season 1 we see him as a child cooking for sam, i hate that dean has zero self worth, he feels like he's a grunt coz that's how john used him, that's what john taught him he's good for, not learning & going to school, just hunt monsters & protect sam so Sam can succeed & go to college, dean raised Sam, he doesn't see himself as smart or worth living or making a difference, he's also depressed coz he lost his blood brother (benny) & it's not because anything benny has done, he had to give him up & his best friend (cas) is MIA & they still don't know what's wrong with him 😭, i do love nesting dean so much, whispering subtext killed me 🤣, it's hard to know where subtext ends & text starts with this show, like it's just there if you want it, it's not very sub lol, great reaction, shelley 👏

It was funny because I had been watching the show since the beginning and for me it really reinvigorated my interest and I started looking for every little clue, and looking into Hays-era queer coding and all sorts of interesting stuff. It's fascinating.

It's incompatible with the concept of a good or just god. Excellent point about Hitler. He was a coward and would have leapt at the chance to torture others. On a related note, Texas scares me. There are more Nazis there than there were in the Wehrmacht. If Dean had sex with Ellie and someone (possibly Sam) fell victim to the Hellhound, how could he ever live with himself? He has never let sex distract him from a case or take priority over people's lives. He's also been a lot less enthusiastic about casual hook-ups since the Amazons. If Dean had just decided to go for it, it would have been seriously out of character. I love nesting Dean. He finally has a place he can call home.

2021-10-20 02:46:37 +0000 UTCDean as the caretaker with zero self esteem (except for being the best hunter… he still feels worthless as a person) means he doesn’t care if he lives or dies as long as everyone else is ok. It’s heartbreaking to see that and as you said, especially when he loses those close to him, like Benny and Cas. It leaves him with nothing to look forward to, and you can clearly see that he is so depressed. I am with you in hoping he sees value in living…maybe the bunker as home. Wasn’t it cute how happy he is that the memory foam mattress remembers him. Sad though, when that’s the best thing in your life. Kudos to Sam for being strong and just as willing to step up as Dean. Sam doesn’t often get to shine when his big brother is around, but maybe this will be his chance.

And like you, the first time I saw this episode I so badly wanted to hug him and also to cry a little! (And HELLO! Dean in that grey Henley T-shirt! 👀) I was very worried about Sam taking on the trials - Sammy, be careful!! And the look on Dean's face in that last shot - he's so worried! 😩 As far as Dean turning down the chance to sleep with Ellie, I can see the subtext you're seeing. But I've always felt like it was actually really in keeping with his character. There was a hellhound actively trying to kill someone at the time. And Dean needed to kill it not only to save the person, but also it was step one to closing the gates and as we saw, he was willing to die to accomplish that. So, in comparison, saying no to sexy times seems like a small sacrifice. 😄 Also, Dean has done it before. In the first trickster episode, Gabriel offers up those two illusion women to Dean if he'll give him time to escape and Dean turns them down too. Dean can be a horndog 😄 but he tends to put the job in front of everything, or at least everything HE wants. It's too bad for us though that he was being all PROFESSIONAL! We could have gotten another Dean love scene - I wouldn't complain! 😜 Two of my favourite moments in this episode are the two speeches - Dean's to Sam and Sam's to Dean. When Dean says, "I'm a grunt, Sam. You're not. You've always been the brains of this operation." and then Sam says, "You're not a grunt, Dean. You're a genius...you're the best damn hunter I've ever seen, better than me, better than Dad." 😭😭😭 It was so wonderful to hear someone finally remind Dean how smart he is. And of course it was his little brother who lowkey hero worships him. 😍 Because Sam is the more academic of the two Dean is often made to feel (mostly by himself) that he is dumb - and he SO is not!! His strategic thinking, his ability to adapt to any situation, his ability to think on his feet! Those are all kinds of intelligence too and it was great to finally have Sam validate it! Loved this reaction! P.S. Dean in glasses is all kinds of YES!! 🤤

2021-10-19 22:20:15 +0000 UTCI love that you noticed the emphasis on dean being a mom and the picture because dean became sam's mom basically after she died but i also wanted to mention something elle said. What would you do for your mom? This hits deep for dean because that right there is why he became a hunter. We talked about why sam went back to hunting in season 1 and stayed the rest of the seasons but dean desire to hunt all goes back to his father and him wanting to also avenge mary. The reason dean does not see the light at the end of the tunnel and wants to go out fighting is because once they stop all the demons his main reason to be in this life similar to sam at the beginning of this season is gone. That is a scary thing for dean. He killed yellow eyes in 2 and released demons in 2 in the process. This would finish that. Amelia saved sam and sam wants to save dean from that the same way. Showing him that they have more reasons to keep going and have other things to fight for and live for. Also glasses being so symbolic as well because when you think of glasses you think knowledge and studying and school stuff. So research for solution to see hellhound and hunter skill to kill it.

I find it so interesting that dean said god wants them to take the SAT because this whole season school, knowledge, spells and books have been foreshadowing sam task this season. He is literally taking a test. These trials are best completed by someone who is both a hunter and a men of letters. Dean is the best hunter and sam is the best men of letters so together they can work on closing the gates. Dean is too willing to die to be the one who physically shuts the gates so sam is the best candidate because he wants to live on.

Dean pours out his heart to tell Sam that he wants the best for him and I melt inside every time I hear it. Later, Sam lets Dean know that he looks up to him, that he's his role model, smart and a great hunter. Those words the brothers share get me in the feels every time.

And I have to mention Dean looking totally swoon in that henly tee in the beginning. The glasses (incredibly hot), Ellie has good taste. What look can't that man pull off, he could show up naked and he would still. . . ok I got lost there for a minute. I loved what Sam said to him at the end. I know we all believe in Dean, and like you say he's such a mom and willing to sacrifice himself every time. He's so selfless and heroic. But Sam stepped up, wouldn't you just know it would be him. He's just like Dean running in to save his brother. So now the trails are on Sam. This is going to be good. Finally I feel like we have a mission, closing the gates. I will definitely be re-watching this one.
