Definitely the best one of the series, although I have a nostalgic soft spot for Beyond Thunderdome, it came out when I was 3 and I was probably about 6-7 when I first saw it. The filmmaking on this is incredible, it’s basically a 2 hour car chase, doesn’t give you much room to breathe. Seeing this on the big screen was an experience, weirdly similar to seeing Mandy at the cinema too, completely different films but they both had really singular vibes to them. Watch Mandy if you get the chance! Fun fact, the guy who played Immortan Joe, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also played the main villain Toecutter in the original Mad Max back in ‘79.

Max himself is basically like the Silent Protagonist of every video game (like Gordon Freeman in Half Life) - so even though it's 'his' movie franchise, every story in every film has very little to do with him directly as a character but rather the people he decides need his help.
But yeah, fully agreed - Fury Road is the best one in the franchise. It combines the best of the worldbuilding from earlier films with a massively improved budget for gorgeous practical effects. Also - the other films don't have Guitar Guy. Which automatically makes them less awesome.

Fury Road is by far the best of the series. You don't need to see the others, although the first one, Mad Max, is his origin story, the rest are not in sequential order, including this one. The movies are campfire tales, post apocalyptic urban legends of a man who helps others. Two more are coming, including Furiosa's origin.
