Wow, you're stressing so hard about not knowing what is going on. Movies used to be like that! All of us old people who saw these movies in the theater had the exact same experience. It's OK to not know everything that is going on. That's what your imagination is for. And, if it is important to the story, the story will tell you eventually.
As you kind of indicated a few times, I think you went into it "knowing" too much and expecting too little. You expected a hokey, 1970's sci-fi movie and had an epic scale space opera dropped in your lap. They didn't hand feed you a story, and you're expected to pay attention (some of your answers are in the dialogue) but also accept that it is a huge world they are building and you can't possibly know everything about it up front.

You're getting way too upset over not knowing what's going on, and you're beating yourself up too much. Just try to pretend like It's 1977, and you're watching it for the first time along with hundreds of millions of other people, who also have no idea what's going on. And for the next one, just pretend like it's 1980 and you along with everyone else haven't seen it yet.
