The Two Towers Full Reaction

The Two Towers Full Reaction

Aragorn is part elf as well, albeit a very small part by now. Elrond, Arwen's father, had a twin brother named Elros. The brothers were half-elves and while Elrond chose the immortality of the elves, Elros chose to take on the Gift of Men -- in other words, he chose to become mortal, though he still lived hundreds of years. He became the founding king of the Numenorean kingdom, Aragorn's direct ancestor. Thus, Aragorn and Arwen are very distantly related. This string of themes -- twin brothers, the love between mortal and immortal, and the choice of fates -- is endemic in the history of the family. The song Aragorn was singing in Fellowship about the elf maiden Luthien and her beloved Beren, a mortal man, was about the great-grandparents of Elrond and Elros. Elros himself lived out that story, as does Aragorn in his turn. Just as Elrond was a twin, he has twin sons -- Elladan and Elrohir, though they do not appear prominently in the films. There are many other examples. Interestingly, there is also a relationship between Arwen and Galadriel, the later being the grandmother of the former. Elrond's wife, Celebrian, was the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn. And Galadriel is a fascinatingly powerful figure in Middle-Earth. She is literally older than the sun in the lore, having been born in the Years of the Trees, when the two trees, Telperion and Laurelin, were the sources of light in the world. Back then, the elves lived together with the angels -- the Valar (archangels) and their subordinate Maiar (Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, the Balrog, and many others being examples thereof in mortal forms). Only after the trees were destroyed by Morgoth (one of the Valar, Sauron's former master) and Ungoliant (the mother of the dread spiders, an embodiment of the Void) were the Sun and the Moon brought into being. This makes Galadriel at least 8,000 years old and possibly one of the oldest beings in Middle-Earth.

This is especially clear in Theoden's reaction to the arrival of the elves. He didn't believe they had a chance and the arrival of these legendary warriors leaves him speechless because he's daring to believe he may have been wrong about their chances after all. It's a glimpse through the mask of bravado.

I’m re-re-watching your reaction! What most first time movie watchers do not know and what can easily be gleaned from reading the books is that The Eldar, the first born, the elves, when they were at the height of their greatness and even during the trilogy were very “magical”. They created objects that held magical properties. The sword “Sting” that glows when enemies are near, the palantiri or seeing stones, the elvish rope given to Samwise which will hold it’s knot until the thought of it releasing, the elvish cloaks which hide the wearer simply by the thought of wishing not to be seen. The list goes on and on. It should be noted also that while elves can die in battle are otherwise immortal which is why Elrond (only half-elven) looks just as he did thousands of years ago.

I had a good laugh when, in the middle of being totally stressed out by the beginning of the Battle of Helm's Deep, Maple commented "The Star Wars scream?" Once you learn about the Wilhelm Scream exists, you never miss it. Since I'm binging around after joining recently, I don't know how much she knows about it, but use of the Wilhelm Scream pre-dates Star Wars by more than 20 years.

There is something to note here, Theodan is not acting prideful, he is acting like a king. He knows they are screwed, he knows the battle is hopeless, and he knows they wont win. However if they have any chance of winning he also knows that they need to have courage and hope. He struts about looking sure of himself because if HE is sure of victory his men just might start to believe in it. If HIS courage holds, then his soldiers will hold too, and that little ounce of courage might make them fight harder, longer, and give more to that victory if they believe in it. Again it seems like arrogance and pride, but that last scene shows he is well aware of the situation, but he MUST put a brave face on. Aragorn learns from this as you see in movie three.

I am having problem syncing up! My version seems to go a bit faster then there's. Had no problems with Hacksaw Ridge reaction.

I understand why you were upset at Elrond telling Arwen to leave, but personally as I get older I see his perspective more. It's like telling your kid not to do crack. Sure it's fun for 5 minutes but then you have to live the rest of your life without the best thing you ever had. What's 5 minutes to a lifetime? The life Arwen would have with Aragorn is equivalent to that 5 minutes of happiness. It's a hard thing to tell a daughter but the right one imo.

Do NOT give yourself a few days, even if you do need them ... You see, it's like in those great stories. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were ... and sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? ... Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to something :) Trust me, it's worth your time.

Sam's monologue is so good. You don't miss much, so don't bother with notes. You are too engrossed to take them anyway :-) Great reaction!
