You may have found out elsewhere but Blithe didn’t die as the end text advised. He went on to serve in Korea. However, none of the guys in Easy were aware and so Ambrose’s book and the guys on set didn’t correct this until after the show aired and that was found out. According to Wiki, he died in 1967 while on active duty of a perforated ulcer.

It's a really interesting way to deal with anxiety, and as someone whose always had plenty of that, I have to say I kind of admire this radical acceptance of his own doom as a way to keep moving forward. Scary dude, no doubt, but I do admire him.
