I remember watching this episode without any idea Cas was returning so once I saw him, I responded much like Dean but just a tad more hysterical grinning and was glued to screen. The scenes they share in the car are amazing especially how he is ridiculously adorable when he still acts like the old Cas - explaining his name came from bouncingbabynames.com, "he betrayed you, this dude?" and referring to the awkward car ride by saying it must be difficult for Meg instead of getting the joke.
Now I loved Cas back then even after all that happened so it broke my heart to lose him no matter what and having him back now overshadowed the rest of the episode and it had some really amazing Sam scenes. It's easily one of Sam's pure goodness examples that he still helps another person when he is going through that nightmare but he also takes the entire blame of the aftermath pushing Marin to leave. And yet...the smiting music flashbacks, the damn trench coat scene and Dean being careful with handling him as well as pep talking the guy who would be a million times dead after what he did to Sammy...it was too much and I loved it all!

I love this episode sooooo much! Just think of all the different cars Dean has driven since Cas walked into that river. This shows that Dean not only saved Cas’s trenchcoat.. but he made sure to keep it with him in every car.💙💚 And I think it’s telling that out of all the years that Cas has existed.. the memories that made him remember who he is all centered around Dean. My heart can’t take it!!

I was actually put in a ward here in Bentley AU for over a month, I got out a few weeks ago, so this episode hits pretty close to home rewatching it. I like that Sam going to Hell really had so much consequence through the show for the last 2 seasons. I get why Cas was like a full genocidal dictator of heaven and earth, partly due the Levi's but still. Glad he can make up a little of it, even if this is just the tip of the tip of the iceberg.

Dean & Sam knew they were leaving Meg. They mentioned it at the end. Meg likes Cas. He's her Clarence. So she's watching over him.<p>After losing Frank last episode, the boys <b>needed</b> a win. This was a big win, even though now Cas is crazy.</p>

Your cry when you saw Castiel probably woke up my whole neighborhood, but it was so worth it!!! I loved the reaction!

I am thrilled that for you the show has always given you what you wanted. I cannot say the same, but love the show anyway.

Yep, that's Rachel Miner. The same actress who has played Meg since season 5.

This is a wonderful episode and I was living for your reactions. I have a soft spot for the actress playing Marin because she went from SPN to having a major role in my other top 5 show "Hannibal".

Shelley is a true fan of the show. She recognized Sam's butt before she saw his face.

I was not so thrilled that Cas came back. I used to love him, but not anymore after what he done to Sam and by doing it to Dean. Plus he brought Leviathans and Bobby has died because of it. But I really like his interactions with Meg, that's always hilarious. And we have Sam back now, so I'll take it as a win. I love how Sam even on a edge of dying still cares about other people and helping that girl. Great reaction, glad you enjoyed episode.

I love the use of “Turn into Earth” by The Yardbirds as Cas wipes out the demons and regains his memory. It’s such a haunting piece of music and it’s so perfect for that moment. He went around using his powers to heal for months but it wasn't until he used them to destroy that he remembered who he was.
Cas became catatonic was in more danger WITH Sam and Dean than without. And Cas' is also in danger just existing. So they couldn't leave Cas in the hands of a regular human. They needed someone with some juice to protect Cas. Meg is dangerous and smart. And angels and demons are the threat here. Cas ALSO had anonymity. Dean said all the demons who knew about Emmanuel were dead. It was in her best interest to keep Cas safe. So -- he put a dangerous guard next to Cas. He didn't trust her, he trusted she needed Cas. It's not bad logic in my opinion.
Meg will watch over Cas because that means Cas will be there to have her back if Crowley comes to find her, and keeping him there in the hospital is a good way of ensuring no one does find them. She’s already proven to be a powerful ally a couple of times. So long as it remains in her best interest - and it will for as long as Crowley’s hunting her - she’ll keep up her end of the truce.

Dean finally had the chance to give Cas his coat back. He also got to finally express a bit of the anger he felt towards Cas that he never got the chance to before Cas "died." He couldn’t even properly mourn Cas’s “death” because he was too messed up by his feelings of betrayal. Not that this stopped him from carrying Cas’s coat around from car to car, job to job. He's had this grief-fueled-anger and this anger-fueled-grief since Cas exploded in that lake. Like what Bobby said about his wife in Death's Door, "We never got to get past this.” Dean never got to say goodbye to his best friend and he never got to tell him how pissed off he was at him. He never got to get mad and then eventually forgive him. Now he finally gets that opportunity. But then he had to leave his friend in the facility, with Meg of all people, who apparently she is the best of the bad options that they had.
“You’re not a machine,” Cas says. Dean is HUMAN and he has a RIGHT to his pain. Cas was once Dean’s very best friend, and Cas still “gets” him on a level that no one else does. And even subconsciously, Cas still puts him first.

OMG... Shelley totally missed Misha's credit at 4.17 mark !!! Made the reveal all the more special as it’s not like there was a ton of foreshadowing that he’d return. Back in the day they promoed the hell out of this episode to let fans know that Misha is coming back.
I think Sam's storyline, from the moment he emerged from hell soulless to this episode when Castiel finally ends his torment, is my favorite post Kripke, the best storyline he had on the show till this point. Sam is always willing to forgive Cas once he fully understands what’s going on, and he shows great concern for Cas once he’s no longer hallucinating. There’s the emotion behind their words, but not tension, which I believe is the major difference between them and Cas and Dean.

Sera Gamble on Sam's psychological hell damage and its cure (From Supernatural The Official Companion S7):
“For us, the point of that moment was that when we broke the wall in Sam's head we wanted to make sure we didn't make it a problem that could just be fixed, that someone could come in and just mend that again. We wanted to make sure that the problem had weight and consequences, and that if Castiel managed to step back in and say, 'Okay, I'm here. I'm sorry. I made a mistake. Now how can I fix it? Let me erase it,' he would discover that he couldn't, that this was a true and real problem. The best that he could do would be to transfer it [to himself] and take it on. That seemed to be a fair way of dealing with something as massive as what would happen to a human soul that had been trapped in Hell."
As a viewer, I supposed it’s a supernatural ailment, and so a supernatural “cure” makes sense, even if it’s convenient.

And finally, in December 2020, the studio/network drafts version dd Jan 9, 2012, circulated on tumblr, with the following lines in the scene,
DEAN
Dumb to keep. I know I saw you dissolve or whatever
But just in case. 'Cause I never stopped wanting to fix it either. So we got something in common.
(Re the coat) Just take it. Please.

The studio/network drafts script was won by a fan, and it was signed by Misha. So I believe it would have been the final script that should have been the one aired if Jensen didn't change the lines.

For DeanCas fans, the scene where Dean returned the trenchcoat to Cas was a very BIG scene.
Jensen had talked about the scene, that he had difficulty performing the scene with the scripted lines for reasons given in the link in the above thread by Vel, and after discussing with the director, in the finally aired scene, Dean just gave Cas his trenchcoat back, no line is said by Dean.
There are three versions of the scenes, the aired one,
(from Superwiki)
DEAN
Maybe to fix it. Wait.
DEAN opens the trunk of the car and takes out CASTIEL’s trenchcoat. He holds it out to CASTIEL
From the promo of the episode, when returning the coat, Dean said,
DEAN: Part of me always believe that you’d come back

So happy you were not spoiled about his return! But yeah, now he’s just sitting in that mental hospital, so that is disappointing but I guess is no different than when he used to disappear to heaven.anyway, I think you will enjoy the remainder of the season.

I LOVED YOUR REACTION!!
I swear I have been standing on my fingers to keep from texting any spoilers! I felt so bad watching you agonize over Cas' death and refusing to believe he was gone. 💔
I just kept telling myself be patient; Shelley is going to be so surprised!! And girl, you did not disappoint. I was tearing up sharing your excitement and joy. I still remember how hard it hit me the first time I watched this episode. Pretty sure the neighbors would tell you they saw me dancing like a crazy person in the livingroom window. Now each time I rewatch it my emotions are all tied to Dean and how he is experiencing it for the first time- every time lol. And since my SPN obsession is stretching toward 16 years without fading in the least I imagine I will put myself and Dean through this emotional blender countless more times.
Bouncingbabynames.com never gets old. I always chuckle.
Watching Dean trying to handle Cas and Meg is like watching him herding cats.
And when he opens that trunk and hands the bloody trench coat to Cas, be still my heart 💜 Dean has dragged that neatly folded coat from car to car. He didn't leave it in Baby's trunk. THAT relationship will require decades of therapy.
I really liked seeing Sam pulling it together enough to do what the Winchester boys do, and put an angry spirit to rest before the last bit of wall crumbled in his head.
Lucifer irritated the crap out of me... but he was supposed to. And damn, Mark did a great job.
There is some great storytelling yet to come this season. 🤫 I will say no more. Already excited for your next reaction. Yeah, I'm not the most patient person. I know. Sorry. 🙃

Great reaction. The bit where Cas is smiting those demons and we get that music and flashbacks are my favorite part of this episode. I was shocked to see him when I first watched this episode. I liked how it turned out though. Cas taking Sam's burden seemed appropriate.
It is the same actress playing Meg. She looks a little bit different, but not much. Her face is swollen from the medicine she's taking. She has multiple schlerosis and it was really affecting her by this time. I love that they still brought the same actress back even with that.

Luis - it wasn't a choice. It was written in the script, and Jensen didn't want to do it initially because it didn't feel like something Dean would do (although I disagree with that, tbh...but I have to trust in Jensen's read of things because he created the character) He's said as much at conventions...but who really knows what the real truth is. If I run across it, I'll share it with you. ETA: HA! We were both a bit off. Something was written in the script, but it was Guy Bee who suggested that Dean fold it like a flag of a soldier who died on the battlefield. I feel like there's a story there, but we're only getting a piece of it, you know...? And his hesitance was in giving it back to him in the way it was scripted, so they did something different. Lol. I always laugh about how we can all take things much differently than how it's intended. But at least it's fun.
There are links from a podcast done after 7.02...and there are also links to when he said other things about it. http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Castiel%27s_Trench_Coat
Even so, I wish they would have left the scene in when Sam was going through all of Cas's things in the trunk because it was very sweet.

The actress who plays Meg, Rachel Miner, suffers from multiple sclerosis. I believe steroids like prednisone are one of the treatments so I always assumed she looked a little different because prednisone can make your face a little puffy.

I love this episode. You're right, it's full circle and the only "right thing to do". And thank you for noticing that even when Sam is at his lowest point, he's still there helping other people. It's one of my favorite things about this episode. ETA: Meg keeping watch over Cass is what Dean meant about mutually assured destruction. She needs him as much as he needs to be looked after.
HA! Never forget that SPN is always going to be the show that gives us what we want...but never in the way we expect it. They even tell us this all the time. Bastards...lol.

So Dean has had to transfer that trenchcoat from trunk to trunk in all the cars he’s used thinking Cas has been dead this whole time ☺️

And just like that, this season got better 😌
God bless that shoot of Emanuel 🥰😏
Mr Ackles killing it again. I hope he now added to his special skills “acting on camera” cause oh boy.
On a side note: if you believed that Cas death on ep 2 was unceremonious, it because it was. The folding of the trench coat was an acting choice from Jensen cause he felt it was the right move.
Cas was supposed to stay death because they (writers) wanted to focus on just Sam and Dean, but fans were pissed about it and ratings dropped so they brought him back, thats why he was gone for the most of the season.
I missed him sooo soo much❤️😭
And then we got Meg back too!! I kinda missed her.
No, its the same actress
I love how Dean (even when he betrayed and its mad at Cas) tries to protect Cas 😭❤️
That scene when Cas get his memories back still gives me chills 🤩🤩
And when Dean gives him the trenchcoat ufff 😭❤️
One of my fav episode of the season!!! Awesome reaction!
