Dodgeball is the highlight of this episode for me...the younger flashbacks just seem so off other than Colin Ford being great as a young Sammy. Maybe it's more that I can actually see how his journey connects since the last season but it does a obvious swerve with Dean. Layers are added to Sam showing such an impact from the tidbit of info we get but it felt like we were getting that skewed version of the story on Dean like Tall Tales showed us. The gym shorts, headband and whistle don't exactly make up for his younger self being one note but at least it was refreshing to get this insightful reflection of Sam with his teacher in two timeframes. He has been such a mystery since season 4 started - and I love how well developed and deep they show him in this episode!

I think you are right. Some writers do treat the characters differently. At times I don't think some writers think very highly of Dean. They take what is given them about his character and treat it wtih the worst perspective. These two writers are not "bad" either. Dabb can have a habit of tweaking things to fit the story he wants to tell, even if it doesn't mesh with history and such. He's got a mixed record for me. Some of his eps I like, some I don't. The other writer was the newer one of the two to the show and I do generally like him.
When his girlfriend says what she did there at the end, Dean would never have said "I'm a hero" like that. I'm not saying that the scene wouldn't have happened, just that Dean would have likely not said anything at all after what she said. That's how he responds to things like that. I have always thought that he cheated on her because of the whole "meet the parents" thing. He knows he'll be leaving and he just wants it to stay casual. Even if he cared for her. Protect his heart as well as hers, even if he hurts it now.
