I'm a bit delayed in my commenting. No internet at home, so things happen when they can.
Great reaction and loved your discussion at the end. Good mid season finale, wasn't it? Season 4 is just on a whole other level of awesomeness. I totally agree with you about loving that this show makes you think. It's a show that really needs to be re-watched too, in order to really absorb everything that's going on. It's that way for me. I love re-watching this show. It's like comfort food for me now.
I take Castiel's looks during that exchange between Anna and Dean in the barn as more of a mix of study and introspection about human feelings. And also likely a bit of discomfort, because he knows her as an angel but she's acting like a human. This is all new to him.
Anna, an angel he knew, is acting like a human. Gave up everything, to live as a human. To have feelings. Cas has been very close to humans since rescuing Dean. Has a sort of connection to Dean from that. I think he's having some kind of feelings - whatever an angel can have that passes for feelings. Maybe being so close to humans and interacting with them affects angels? Maybe posessing humans affects them too?
Maybe he's a bit jealous of her having that with Dean. Being able to. It hasn't been said, so no way to know if angels have any sort of thing between themselves, but it wouldn't be the type of thing between humans I suspect, with lack of feelings like that. So doubt he'd be able to feel like he would be jealous of her kissing Dean. He may be curious about the feelings of it though. He just looked very introspective to me. Like he was thinking pretty deeply about what was going on. He had a mission. Anna disobeyed. She needs to be punished. But maybe he's having doubts - like he told Dean a while back during the Samhain episode.
The big gut punch for me with this episode was at the end. Not only for what Dean said, but for what that meant. We now know that human souls go to Hell and can become demons. After a while. Well, dean was there for a while and I think him torturing souls there was a first step to him becoming a demon. Stripping away of his humanity. Luckily Cas got him out in time. A month on earth is 10 years in Hell, so it may have taken hundreds of years in Hell for him to become a demon, while not that long on earth. Disturbing to think about and breaks my heart.
