Principles of Difference & the Meaning of Quality
Added 2024-06-22 03:42:56 +0000 UTCPerceived difference in experience is how we know there is. Quality is the feeling of difference in and between experiences. Quality is essential in how we determine what there is, what kinds of things there are, and which we prefer. Developing vocal ability is dependent on learning how to read the “signs” of experience which are uniquely grounded in action. This is why voice learning is fundamentally a perceptual process. The ability to sense and know value in and between ongoing actions comes from quality. Even in the simplest case of trying to mimic a target (like when you were a baby or if you are just mimicking different voices you've heard), that target acts as a stable reference in experience to which actions are then related (checked for difference) which affords a sense of "good" (closer) or "bad" (further) from the target (quality).
This discussion starts with a lecture on perceiving difference, problems of communicating about difference, and lays out the structure of quality for our future meetings and uploads. This was lecture #3 on our Sunday sessions. There are lots of files, videos, and documents on the Patreon which illustrate qualitative targets but little in the way of contextualizing quality more broadly. I love these kinds of fundamental, perceptual discussions (shocker) and had a lot of fun with this one!
warmly,
Z
