I’ve seen this episode countless times and I never thought of Dean having a drinking problem. People asked if he was drinking because he was acting weird, but the only times I saw him drink was when he had a beer after mowing the lawn and then his girlfriend handed him a beer when he was sitting on the couch. Now I’m going to watch it again and pay more attention. I actually think Dean drinks more in the real world.

I think he would drink same as he always has. People just assumed he was drunk because he was acting weird, asking questions he should have known the answer to, being super loving with Sam when they weren't close. So I don't think Dean really had an issue with alcohol, I think it was just how others in the episode rationalized why he was acting so strange.
