I totally see your point of view based on Oz. What did it for me was that Sam finally met someone that he cared about after Jessica and he wasn’t able to cure her and Dean being the protective older brother wanted to do it himself to spare Sam from the pain and burden and the tear on Dean’s face in the last scene knowing that he wasn’t able to protect Sam from the hurt.

You mentioned Oz in Buffy and what he had going for him was a group of friends who knew about werewolf's and vampires and things in the night. He had a slayer who was there to help him. She didn't have that support system. Only person who knew were Sam and Dean who were leaving town. Maybe she could try to chain herself up every night but if she accidentally falls asleep on the couch watching TV one evening, then she could kill someone and that's on Sam and Dean's heads for allowing it to happen. Sam and Dean have also expressed in past episodes not wanting to 'subject' people to the truth of what's out there. It's better they get to live in ignorance, so it's not an option for them to go get friends and family members of hers and sit them down and say 'all of the evil things you hear about are real, your loved ones a werewolf, you need to lock her up every night.' I also like the story that sometimes, you can't stop the evil. Sometimes the evil 'wins' and there's not always a happy solution. This is the first, of what could be many, hard choices that they will have to make.
