Early Access: Biggest Lip Sync FAILS (2024)

I went completely off topic and ranted, sorry about that 😊

I don’t mind the use of autotune, even live when it’s actually necessary, as much as you do. But what scares me is the lack of critical thinking both in the older and the younger generation, both seem so unaware sometimes when they are either being lied to (old) or heavily influenced to support or cancel something (young). The recent Nikki Minaj/ Megan the Stallion thing served only the money making machine, no good music as a result, as an example. Also the way everyone listened to an old Britney song just to show Justin they don’t support him. I don’t know how so many people become so involved in a “cause” like it’s the most important thing and it’s mostly bad music in the end. It’s probably just bias that makes me think that our generation supported better artists for better reasons 😁 About everyone having to be looking a certain way, rather than bringing something interesting with their songs, I think it started with the golden generation from the Disney club in the late nineties, at least they were the first I noticed having more of an image than something interesting to say in their music. Still some of the songs hold up as feel good nostalgia music. I am still optimistic that people like Adele, Ed Sheeran, Hozier (I know I am as basic as they come, I couldn’t think of others now 😂) who are not conventionally attractive are successful, but they are already an old generation too, I don’t really have the patience to look into newer music lately.

Maybe younger listeners (the under 35 crowd, for example) expect perfection because they don’t know any better? They weren’t around when music was— I dunno, simpler..? Back when actual, real instruments were used..? Maybe recreating that studio performance in a live setting just isn’t as feasible as it once was? What began with the invention of auto tune— maybe what was supposed to be a tool has become a crutch or even a necessity in order for some artists to do an acceptable live performance? In those instances, I honestly have less respect and appreciation for it, because it’s just a facade. Gimme something *real*! 🤌🏻🤌🏻 Maybe I’m too harsh of a critic? What I’ve noticed is: since the late 90’s the pop music genre has (de)evolved to be very image-focused instead of the talent or musicality-focused days of old.. It feels like, nowadays, anybody with the right looks or reputation or popularity can become some record producer’s cash cow. And probably just as true, if someone doesn’t fit into a little box or narrative, they’re going to be overlooked and dismissed, no matter how talented they are. Maybe I just don’t like modern pop or what the music industry has become? Even with today’s popular music, I have a strong preference for the singer-songwriters, the storytellers, the rock n’ rollers, and soulful-sounding artists I was raised on. Ehh, maybe I’m just some cranky old lady, desperately trying to cling to my youth? Maybe I should get off the internet because I’m just ranting and rambling into the ether at this point? I dunno. I don’t know anything. Just thinking out loud 😕

I'm not totally disagreeing with you, but I remember growing up in the nineties a lot of singers doing playback, so it's not that new. I think Joel might be getting it a bit backwards, he is saying that listeners expect perfection, but I think the problem is more in the fact that most singers record stuff as high/complex/etc. as they can, just because they can (are talented enough, in a studio environment, with as many opportunities as they need to do so), and the reality of performing it live, especially on some tour where their voice gets tired, is only an afterthought. That said there is beauty in the show for bigger concerts that may use modern techniques to make the artist sound good, but there are also a lot of smaller shows, with maybe local artists that sound great live.

Hot take: if people have to lip sync at what is supposed to be a live performance, then perhaps they are either doing too much activity on stage or maybe they don’t have as much talent as they are trying to convince others into believing they have? (Yeah, I said what I said 💅🏼) 30 years ago (obligatory “back in my day”), we didn’t have auto tune, there wasn’t any of this pre-recorded or playback vocals nonsense. People just played and sang and it was wonderful living in the moment— without the stupid cell phones blocking the view too— a live performance was a memorable, magical, and fun experience, pitchy vocals and all (if there ever were any). I don’t think the standards have changed, I think fans have always wanted to see great performers do their thang on stage. I think what has changed is accepting mediocrity and inauthenticity. If I go to a concert, I didn’t pay to hear something that sounds just like the recorded version— I can do that at home! I want to see a great show, sure, but primarily I wanna see and hear The Real McCoy. Few things irk me more than inauthenticity, and I have very little patience for it. [sigh] I find it sad how being fake is just supposed to be like an acceptable social norm now 😕

Can I suggest that you rephrase the part about being demonetised? As I understand it the monetisation of the video is claimed by the copyright owner, and while both have the same effect I saw someone confused by the fact that there are still ads on the videos.

Adina

I love the ones where they don’t even attempt to hide the fact they’re lip syncing. Just look like they’ve checked out 😂

Becky Lorion

I like how fair you are in these

Snoodle

That's a fun video. I love when artists adamantly insist they always sing live but it's obvious when they're lip syncing.
