nicFW880 First Steps/Backup & Reverting to Stock Firmware

Comments

I understand you were just trying to give out useful information and that's fine. But when you have a sample size of one, it's generally not a good idea to use data from that to make broad claims. Although there is a large degree of hypocrisy in that as I've been guilty of it myself many times.

ok. I couldn't get RMS to connect, asked other chat members for help, some said it didn't work for new radios, which fit my testing, made sense to me...I guess it wasn't clear for at least a few of us. I did try to flash on both Win 11 and 2 macs, none would connect, was using supplied programming cable, default baud. Once I flashed on FlasherX, it did connect on Win 11 app, but still not on macs. I understand you don't have/use/like macs, and I'm not pushing for that. I guess it was my mistake somewhere, no intent to ruffle feathers. Thank you for your tireless work. The RMS for channels, groups, UI etc.. doesn't work on factory fresh radios. But the firmware flasher in the RMS absolutely DOES work from a fresh radio. In fact the code in the RMS that firmware flashes is the EXACT SAME code as in the Flasher-X app, it's 100% identical I just copy/pasted it into the RMS.

A note to newbies like me: RMS doesn't work with new, factory fresh radios, so your first flash of a nicFW880 bin file can be made using Marcus's RT-880-FlasherX on his GitHub site. It's a .NET app, and runs ok from terminal on my iMac (intel). For me, cd to the project directory (with the .csproj file, then 'dotnet run' it. Small window opens, pick the port your programming cable is plugged in to, leave at 38400 baud, pick a nicFW file and hit Flash Firmware. Then follow the video above to use Marcus's amazing RMS. Thanks Marcus! Please remove if deemed inappropriate.

You should have done, it was covered in the first posts in the 880 collection. In the V17 release post are flash backup files that you can use.

When doing this, trying to Revert to Stock (with the v5/18a bundle) when powering up I got a yellow LED light. I can write back the 16a or the 18a with no problem after that, but it won't let me go to stock again. Problem: I did not made any backup before going to 18a?
