Owen Hatherley responds to listener questions

Owen Hatherley returns to respond to the excellent questions sent in by listeners. Topics included the prospect of a new left party in the UK, housing policy under Keir Starmer's Labour government, and Ian MacDonald's 1994 book Revolution in the Head. Owen also responded to a couple of questions following up on our recent episode on the Manic Street Preachers.

Thanks to everyone who sent in a question and to all of you for your continued support for the show!

Read Revolution in the Head (through aching calves and hips) for free while standing in the Dublin Virgin Megastore over the course of a few weeks. Sort-of began my (stop-start) journey into education and the study of culture in the mid-90s. I kind-of bought the disenchantment thesis of the opening essay for a while before later dismissing a lot of (but not all) of it. Yes, it has a special place in my heart despite its limitations and the writing is great.

Thoroughly enjoyed, interesting stuff as always with Owen. Have to demur re. soft rock era Fleetwood Mac though. Musically slick muzak, entirely predictable, with little more than a soporific effect from sentimental chordings that close down the imagination by giving a safe musical outcome. Combined with a lyrical narcissism, mostly concerned with which member of the entourage two timed them/they are two timing. Self-obsessed coke-addled ramblings of tax exile millionaires. Although maybe Owen just loves them for the air-headed attempt to exoticise Wales in Rhiannon.
