Interregnum - on the lockdown 'sceptics'

Richard Seymour discusses his recent blogpost on the so-called lockdown sceptics, and in particular the work of Toby Green and his book The Covid Consensus: The Global Assault on Democracy and the Poor—A Critique from the Left. We talked about the straw man arguments, factual inaccuracies and conspiratorial thinking that characterise the book and the lockdown sceptic literature more generally. We also talked about why parts of the left have been receptive to some of this work and also what to make of the alliance between some self-styled anti-woke leftists and religious conservatives.

Hi Carl, I put these points to Richard in the new episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/79497955?pr=true

For heavens sake, additionally, pretty much the entire Socialist Campaign Group signed up to zero covid via iSAGE. Something which Richard rather hand-waves over, in his usual style, tbh. That is, the official radical left as elected - rather than journalists or commentators. Questioning quite how that happened does open up uncomfortable questions, in terms of what the left is, who/what it represents.

I’m glad of people attempting a clear-headed appraisal of the 2020 crisis and response. By the way, Hungary *still* has a Covid state of emergency as I write this. What I don’t get from this are some of the specific aspects; that all evidence points to covid not being spread outdoors, and that ‘stay at home’ orders were unnecessary and even dangerous, given the UK’s crowded housing stock. The lack of adaptation… moving activity outdoors. This for me was one of the most concerning aspects.

Excellent, patient and impassioned critique from Richard. I would love to hear a longer analysis of the growing fascist tendencies among some intellectuals/writers/activists (formerly) on the left- and what the push and pull factors are. There also seem to be lots of echoes with the spiked diaspora (e.g., BBC star claire fox). Thanks.

Thanks Alex!

Hi Rosie, apologies for the slow reply. I think it was Sublation magazine and the Aufhebunga podcast we mentioned.

Really good discussion. Thanks Alex and Richard. Couldn't catch the names of those 'right masquerading as maybe economic left but culturally reactionary' media outlets you discussed towards the end. What are they called? All the best, Rosie
