Listener questions: Owen Hatherley on... anything and everything

The recent episode with Owen Hatherley on the new career-spanning collection of his work, Clean Living Under Difficult Circumstances barely scratched the surface, so I'll be putting some more questions to him in a PTO Extra! episode. Topics covered in the book that we didn't get to discuss include The Pet Shop Boys, the architecture of Warsaw, Kraftwerk, the poetry of Andrew Jordan, German expressionism, and architecture and war in Israel-Palestine. If you've read the book then please do send a question on any of those topics - or indeed topics we did discuss in the episode, such as the blogging scene of the early 2000s, the authoritarianism of  New Labour, and Owen's review of K-Punk - the collected writings of Mark Fisher.

If you'd like to put a question to Owen please comment below or email politicstheoryother@gmail.com (with 'listener questions' in the subject line). I can't promise to ask every single question, but will do my best to select the best ones. Thanks as ever for supporting the show!

Emily I'm so sorry! I somehow managed not to ask this question. It was there on my list but somehow I missed. My apologies, it was a great question too.

I have always loved to hear Owen chat about music as well as about cities. (Your Scott Walker episode remains a favourite). So with his last book being on London, what's some of his favourite "London" music?

Adam Robson

Great question! And yes, it's not too late.

I really enjoyed your last podcast with Owen Hatherley! I don't know if it's too late to ask something -- but, with regard to Owen's thoughts on neoliberal cultural stagnation (especially in pop music)... Does his feeling that there's been nothing new under the sun culturally rely upon an indefensible and perhaps implicitly masculinist conception of artistic originality as virtuosic, ex nihilo invention?

Emily Dyson

My question for Owen: in the light of his arguments in New Ruins, what does he make of the Tories levelling up-agenda and policies like the Towns Fund? How different will they be from New Labour’s regeneration agenda?

William

Question for Owen - how much of the authoritarianism of New Labour (and Starmer's new New Labour) is a genuinely authoritarian streak vs something that they cynically feel is necessary to win over a certain set of voters?
