September EP 2

For episode two this month we conquer MIDSOMMAR. It's an Ari Aster picture...so that means the boys will vehemently disagree...and maybe even yell a bit.

Why is the god damn audio so low? Jesus fuck!

Joe was way off on the plot holes. The suicide and the empregnation rituals were clearly just part of their culture and not specific to the festival.

Connor Dennehy

Buried details sometimes get mistaken for plot holes. Hell, all of C Nolan’s movies need 3 watches before what you thought was a poorly conceived scene or character motivation turns out to be months of deep research or thinking that was played too subtlety.

I watched Midsommar last night and so I just now got around to listening to this episode. Maybe this has already been pointed out elsewhere, but Joe saying the death ceremony only takes place every 70 years is just nuts. For that to work, you’d have a bunch of 1-year-olds and then a bunch of 70-year-olds dying off. So those 1-year-olds now raise themselves? On top of that, this movie was full of people of various ages, so that should’ve tipped him off as well… Not complaining here, just an observation, but a lot of the time you guys, or maybe just Joe, really jump the gun with the ‘plot hole’ stuff. A lot of the time the ‘plot holes’ seem to be the result of not following the story so closely… And then instead of assuming you misunderstood something, or that you have the wrong idea, you immediately jump to it being a plot hole. It seems like Joe doesn’t really second-guess his understanding of a story first. Another recent example of this is the Child’s Play remake. Joe says it was illogical that they replace Chucky’s chip and yet he’s still Chucky. That’s a fine point but I’m pretty sure that’s not actually what happens in the movie. I’d have to watch it again to confirm but I’m gonna say it was Chucky’s battery that was destroyed and then replaced, not his personality chip. All that said, maybe I’m wrong on all this. Maybe I’m the one that’s getting it all mixed up.

Quality episode. Quality. Both releases under this format have been very good.

Two September episodes are great! Just became a Patreon donator, wish older episodes like the Chicago live were unlocked also after joining

I do not watch horror movies but I can listen to these two talk about it all day. You have to dig Joe’s passion. I love this GD podcast.

Don’t worry Alec, it’s unloaded

100% this

Fuckin Joe. I disagree with him about 90% of movies, yet he’s my favorite guy to listen to talk about movies.

There’s a bit too much impenetrable logic in Hereditary. The ending shadow is one (there’s no spirit shadows elsewhere) and Byrne catching on fire is one where if you’ve been following the story intensely it can make the scene lose its power. I agree deeply with Joe that the most powerful scenes aren’t just tense, they actually mean something. None of Asters heaviest moments are completely stupid. They’re just so powerful that judgement of logical inconsistencies will naturally mirror them. Joe just has a caustic way of articulating illogic. A shitty movie wouldn’t get less judgement, or be given a pass because expectations were low. It’s really that films which don’t connect won’t elicit any kind of response. We don’t talk about them. We don’t remember them. Note that we’re all talking about Aster’s work. How many other less successful film makers out there are missing the mark and equally being ignored? Aster is doing good work and there is zero reason not to follow this guy, even if you didn’t like his other works. Joe will keep watching. For the good of the show!

Chris McKenzie

Joe has mentioned quite a few times about things in Hereditary not making sense, one he’s sited a bunch is the scene where Gabriel Byrne’s character catches on fire instead of the wife the second time she’s throws the book into the fire (instead of her catching on fire the first time she did it) What I took from that was it just meant the spirits/demons/evil forces at work basically did that as a ‘you fuck with us, we fuck with you’ type scenario, wherein, if my memory serves me correctly, she was either gonna throw the book in the fire to either (need to rewatch because I can’t quite remember) kill her self because she felt she brought the evil upon the family so she figured she’d sacrifice herself in order to save her family (because I’m distinctly remembering her giving a bunch of ‘goodbyes’ and ‘I love yous’ to the husband), or she was trying to somehow just get rid of the evil by throwing the book in the fire, and therefore the evil at work set the husband on fire as a message not to mess with them.

The sexual tension in the episode needs a little more hot sauce. Joe, I love you but you’re being a little too irritated. Aster is trying to think a bit deeper about horror than few are doing these days. It doesn’t mean he’s not going over board, not straight forward enough, or that you must conform to loving his films, but you’re not admitting credit for trying. (Occasionally yelling, “hes good at something! Isn’t that enough!” isn’t genuine) Him showing off doesn’t mean you’re not still awesome. 😘😍

I am having the same predicament. The first thing I did after getting paid from my new job was subscribe to you guys at $7, Would love it if we could listen to the older eps as well.
