Audio Commentary #2!

A bit late on the VideoLog this week - my daughter was home sick from school for half the week so I didn't have time to do something else. So we recorded another Audio Commentary!

If there is a specific episode/s you'd like us to do audio commentary for, let us know!

RGB 101 would be a fun retrospective. Your views then compared to now and what would expected that has or hasn’t happened.

As I said on Discord, I enjoyed this commentary. It was the third one I'd watched on Patreon this week, following two that Matt Ezero posted. I agree with Neil Ross in that it wasn't him on those tapes. It was likely local talent from North Carolina. Neil was the voice of Game Show Network for its first decade. He's announced award shows, but I don't know which ones offhand. I was mostly exposed to him through Garfield and Friends. He voiced DJs, executives, space creatures, store clerks, and superheroes. Of course, his animation resume goes far beyond that series. The Yo-Yo Man was Tommy Smothers, who along with his brother Dick, was part of The Smothers Brothers comedy duo. One of their routines involved who their mother liked best. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smothers_Brothers They had a controversial variety show on CBS in the late 1960s. Steve Martin and the late Bob Einstein wrote for the show, and Bob appeared in sketches as Officer Judy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Smothers_Brothers_Comedy_Hour UPDATE: Speaking of Garfield, the Wikipedia entry reminded me that Lorenzo Music also wrote for their show.

Thanks for the insight.

Hey guys, I love these commentaries. I'm a skateboarder first, and a skate nerd at best so I wanted to throw up my knowledge on the Turbografx stuff. Not sure if anyone really cares but I love this history. Tony hawk owns his own company called Birdhouse Skateboards (that is probably common knowledge) and he edited the first three Birdhouse videos and did work on a lot of the ads and graphics so he had a lot of experience in marketing and design. This is also probably common knowledge but in the 70s and 80s vert skating was the hot thing to do and Tony was one of the top vert pros. In the 90s, things started to switch and street skating became the dominant form of skateboarding, with vert becoming the "lame" style of skateboarding. This left a lot of huge vert pros like Tony in the tough spot of either learning to "skate street" or pretty much lose their careers. Needless to say, this left Tony and Birdhouse in a tough spot financially, so he had to seek out other work. Luckily one of the team members on Birdhouse, Jeremy Klein, worked for Turbo Technologies Inc. I’m unable to find exactly what his role at TTI was, but it seems he was a tester and possibly marketer at the company. Tony was a notoriously big gamer so Jeremy was able to get him a job editing at TTI so that he could make some additional money at the lowest part of his career. This is speculation, but I’m sure this got Tony some connections in the industry so that he could get on one of the biggest and best game series of all time, Pro Skater. Jeremy Klein is a really interesting dude, check out this magazine ad: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gT7CD5oYFN8/Trn8ygza9fI/AAAAAAAAP5w/JH4Sm9ZdkgU/s1600/kleinwhitecollarchrome.jpg You can see in the bottom right pic he has, Turbo Express, Game Gear, Turbografx with Super CD, Turbo Duo, SNES, Model 1 Genesis + CD and games everywhere. I love this ad. Here is another story, and video, with Jeremy in it about advertising for Lords of Thunder: http://www.video-game-ephemera.com/041.htm Hopefully this was interesting if you guys read it, I know you’re busy. Skateboarding and games are so damn cool. Unfortunately, I only skate and don’t really play games, I just do repairs and mods at this point. I’m developing my own show right now in a cinematic documentary style about modding, skating, and existentialism. I really love a lot of the raw approach of people like Bithead1000 and others. I’m interested in pairing that with a cinematic approach and also using an arsenal of old cameras I have. Anyways, love you guys, great job on cramming the MegaSG video. It was great. I would love to see a commentary on the Game Boy video, PS1, and Saturn. Because Saturn is KING!!

Great thumbnail.
