Pokemon: Resurgence Chapter 75

Hi all,

Here’s the first chapter of the week. They take on Team Aqua and Lucas checks out the new features of the expanded System.

Chapter 75

The empty space where Dante should have stood made Lucas's choice crystal clear. His stomach churned at the memory of abandoning the Gardevoir's pokeball at the forest laboratory—he wouldn't desert him again. A shared glance with Sabrina revealed her jaw set with the same iron determination.

Her lips curved into a smirk, and why shouldn't she be confident? Her team could handle almost anything thrown at them.

Their Pokemon fanned out across the forest clearing, each claiming ground to avoid hampering their allies' movements. Lucas's aura barrier shimmered to life around himself and Sabrina while Max planted his feet in a defensive stance, positioning himself squarely between them and any potential threats. Sabrina activated Kasumi and Axels’ Mega Evolutions, to add power to her team.  Lucas did the same with Icarus.

Three people emerged from the treeline, blue badges glinting on their chests—a marker of Team Aqua allegiance. Their leader stepped out behind them, a jagged scar running from temple to jaw. Pokeballs flashed as twelve water-types materialised.

The leader's team dwarfed their opponents—a battle-scarred Gyarados whose scales bore testament to countless fights, a Scyther with blades honed razor-sharp, and a Kingdra radiating raw power. His grunts spread their Pokemon in a loose formation across the forest clearing—Crawdaunt, Swampert and Ludicolo to the left, Sharpedo, Tentacruel and Starmie in the centre, Milotic, Whiscash and Floatzel anchoring the right.

Lucas kicked the satchel behind him as his Pokemon surged forward to meet the grunt's teams. Mortimer materialised beside them, the Gengar's zipper-mouth stretching into a promise of mayhem. Sabrina's Mega-evolved Axel and Kasumi followed Ashura in squaring off against the leader's Pokemon, creating two distinct battlefields in the forest clearing.

Scyther struck first, blades whistling through the air as it charged Kasumi. The Mega Alakazam vanished in a flash of light, reappearing above to unleash a Psychic blast that forced the Pokemon to dive sideways. Axel moved to flank it while Ashura engaged Kingdra in a brutal exchange of blows.

A piercing screech split the air as Gyarados unleashed Hyper Beam. The orange energy carved through the forest canopy, leaves and branches disintegrating in its path. Kasumi's barrier shimmered as it absorbed the devastating blast. Mortimer phased through the ground, emerging behind the serpentine Pokemon. His spectral claws raked scales while Axel's Meteor Mash crashed into its opposite flank. The Metagross' steel-plated fist left a crater in Gyarados's armoured hide.

On Lucas's front, Nero slammed into Crawdaunt with a bone-crushing Crunch as Max's Thunderbolt struck it from above. The water-type staggered back, its crimson shell softening under the combined assault. Swampert tried flanking them with Mud Shot, but Mortimer's Shadow Ball dispersed the earthen projectiles mid-flight.

Saphira coiled above the battlefield like an azure serpent. Her Dragon Breath paralysed Whiscash as it attempted to use Earthquake, causing it to crash to the ground. Milotic's Dragon Pulse forced Saphira into a graceful spiral dodge, buying time for Floatzel to close the gap with Aqua Jet.

Icarus dove through the chaos, his golden wings flashing in the filtered sunlight. Steel Wing caught Ludicolo square in the chest while Ashe's Inferno drove Tentacruel back in a cloud of steam.

Kingdra unleashed Hydro Pump at Ashura, the pressurised water blast splintering a tree trunk. The Medicham leapt clear, retaliating with Thunder Punch. Electricity crackled across the dragon-type's scales as Close Combat followed, each strike precise and devastating against its serpentine form.

Scyther launched an X-Scissor, the blades of wind bisecting the air. Kasumi teleported clear while Mortimer's Shadow Ball met the attack head-on, causing an explosive wind that blew across the clearing. Axel seized the opening with Flash Cannon, the steel-type energy blast catching Scyther mid-spin and sending it crashing through the underbrush.

The grunt's Pokemon betrayed their inferior training through clumsy coordination. Starmie's Psychic attack passed harmlessly through Mortimer as he phased. The Gengar's counter-attack sent it spinning into Tentacruel like a possessed catherine wheel. Nero seized the opening, Earthquake rippling outward to unbalance both water-types.

Max channelled electricity through the saturated ground, voltage arcing between puddles left by water attacks. The grunt's Pokemon jerked as current raced through them. Ashe's Incinerate followed, steam exploding where flames met water in a scalding cloud.

Gyarados thrashed against Mortimer's Night Shade, the ghostly energy constricting like shadow-bonds while Kasumi hammered it with concentrated Psychic force. Above, Axel's Flash Cannon lit up the forest in strobing bursts as it drove Scyther back step by staggering step.

The power gap widened with each exchange. Sabrina's Pokemon moved in perfect sync, attacks flowing together like a choreographed dance of destruction. The leader's team fought with skill but couldn't match her Pokemon’s power and their battlefield experience. Meanwhile, Lucas' Pokemon maintained their advantage against the grunt's less powerful teams, thanks mainly to Icarus’ Mega Form and Mortimer injecting himself into their fight at frequent intervals.

Kingdra collapsed first, Ashura's relentless Close Combat finally overwhelming its defences. Scyther stumbled next as Axel's Meteor Mash crushed through its guard in an explosion of metallic force. Gyarados crashed down last, Mortimer's ghostly energy draining its remaining strength.

The grunt's Pokemon fared no better in the onslaught. Whiscash and Floatzel were knocked unconscious while Starmie spun erratically, psychic energy leaking from its damaged core. Crawdaunt's shell bore spider-web cracks from Max’s Fire Punch, having been softened earlier in the battle. Ludicolo and Swampert lay unconscious, Nero and Icarus standing triumphant over their fallen forms.

The muscular grunt reached for his jacket pocket, fingers brushing metal. Sabrina's telekinetic power crushed his radio before he could call reinforcements, reducing it to sparking components. The grunts exchanged desperate glances, then recalled their fallen Pokemon in flashes of red light.

"Last chance," Lucas said. "Leave."

Their leader glared but stepped back, hand resting on another radio at his belt. It crumpled under telekinetic force.

"No backup coming," Sabrina said.

"This isn't over," the scarred leader snarled, then melted into the forest with his team.

Lucas cancelled Icarus’ transformation. That had a chaotic fight but thanks to Sabrina taking on the leader, it had been much easier than he expected.

Across the battlefield, Sabrina's Pokemon powered down from their Mega forms. He upended the satchel, spilling its contents onto a fallen log. The scanner clattered out alongside thick bundles of pokedollars wrapped in elastic bands. He examined the grey device. Its blue screen was dark but intact.

"Got it," he muttered, placing the scanner and pokedollars in his inventory. "Now to find Dante."

They found the Gardevoir sprawled in a patch of trampled grass, unconscious but breathing steadily. Lucas knelt beside him, retrieving a Revive from his bag. He poured the potion into Dante’s mouth and waited.

Dante's eyes snapped open. He bolted upright, psychic energy crackling around him as he searched for threats.

"Easy buddy," Lucas said, laying a hand on Dante's shoulder. "They're gone."

Dante's shoulders slumped, his expression darkening at being caught off guard so easily. He brushed the dirt off his body with sharp, irritated movements.

"We should leave," Sabrina said, scanning the trees. "Team Aqua won't stay away for long."

Lucas nodded. "Back to Slateport then. Captain Stern will want his scanner."

Lucas bolted upright in the hotel bed. He rubbed his eyes, blinded by a window that appeared in front of him.

SYSTEM REBOOT COMPLETE

RECALIBRATION SUCCESSFUL

SYSTEM FULLY UNLOCKED

NEW MAIN MENU DETECTED

NEW FUNCTIONS DETECTED

Lucas' brows furrowed. The System had never been this active before. Whatever happened with Jason to cause this was a huge deal.

He slipped out of bed, careful not to wake Sabrina. The clock read 3:47 AM as he made his way to the balcony.

“What’s this all about?” Lucas mused. “Main Menu.”

The window that appeared bore little resemblance to his familiar interface. Thirteen distinct functions spread across his vision: Notifications, Status, Skills, Pokemon Team, Den, Pokemon Habitat, World Map, Inventory, Arceus’ Emporium, Quests, Reputation, Archives, and Settings.

Sleep vanished as adrenaline flooded his system. Whatever happened with Jason had fundamentally altered everything he thought he knew.

Each function had a tab. After some experimentation, he learned he could flick through them with merely a thought.

He focused on the Notification tab first, as there was an unread message.

SYSTEM MESSAGE: Full functionality restored. These features aren't mere upgrades—they're tools you'll need for what's coming. The divide between legendaries and humans grows deeper each day. You must bridge this gap, and become the mediator who ensures both sides prosper.

Recent events forced my hand. Though you weren't my first choice, you've proven yourself the right one.

“Is that you Arceus?” Lucas asked, looking up at the sky. “What conflict are you referring to? Why can’t you just fly down here and solve the problem yourself?”

Lucas snorted when he didn’t get an answer. As if he was expecting anything else.

He focused on Quests next, curious to see what it was about. Three categories appeared in the interface: General, Regional, and Legendary. The latter two had several confusing entries under them.

Lucas grabbed the guidebook from his inventory. The pages lay blank except for a single message on the cover:

The guidebook has been replaced by the Archive function. All relevant information can now be found there.

“Not a bad change,” Lucas murmured.

He tossed the book aside and accessed the Archive function. The interface bloomed with icons, each representing a category of knowledge. Under Functions, he found what he sought—comprehensive data about the quest system waiting to be explored.

QUEST SYSTEM

The quest system tracks objectives, missions, and achievements across multiple categories. They provide structured goals with defined rewards upon completion. Some quests unlock automatically through actions or discoveries, while others require specific triggers. All quests must reach a certain threshold of importance. There are no simple solvable quests for basic rewards.

Categories:

Lucas pondered the implications. The quest system appeared to formalise tasks he'd already undertaken, offering tangible rewards for his ongoing efforts. Building favourability with legendary Pokemon was a no-brainer, but now the system acknowledged these achievements properly. The quests categorised under Legendary finally made sense—each entry detailed his current obligations to Pokemon like Zygarde, laying out his progress in stark detail.

But this reputation mechanic raised fresh questions. He scrolled through the archive, searching for answers about how his standing affected the world around him.

===========

REPUTATION SYSTEM

Tracks the player’s standing and influence among humans among the various regions, organisations, and significant groups. Reputation affects access to resources, information, and opportunities. Ratings range from Hostile (-1000) to Revered (+1000).

Nemesis (-1000 to -801)

Hostile (-800 to -601)

Hated (-600 to -401)

Unfriendly (-400 to -201)

Suspicious (-200 to -1)

Neutral (0 to 199)

Friendly (200 to 399)

Favourable (400 to 599)

Respected (600 to 799)

Honoured (800 to 899)

Revered (900 to 1000)

Note: Some organisations may have unique intermediate tiers or special conditions affecting reputation gain/loss. Reputation changes can cascade through related groups —improving standing with one faction may automatically lower it with their rivals.

===========

The reputation system differed markedly from the Pokemon favourability ratings. Rather than tracking individual bonds, it measured broader relationships across organisations and regions. Where favourability focused on personal connections with Pokemon, reputation painted a wider picture of his standing in the world.

Lucas navigated to the Reputation tab, studying his current standings with various factions.

“It only lists the regions I’ve been to,” Lucas murmured. “And the organisations I’ve interacted with enough to make an impression on them. I sure have a lot of enemies.”

He assumed the region's reputation covered things like the government and anything under its umbrella, such as the Pokemon League.

Lucas rubbed his temples, staring at the interface before him. The new update was kind of overwhelming. Even without the new functions, he was certain there were other changes that he still needed to discover. But he was too tired to go over it now. He and Sabrina would be exploring the Sea Cavern today and he wanted to be at his sharpest.

After delivering the scanner to Stern yesterday, the captain told them that they would head for the Sea Cavern immediately. He had put the expedition off for too long because he needed the scanner to detect lifeforms underwater. Stern needed to be sure that Kyogre didn’t catch them by surprise as they were exploring the Sea Cavern.

A pink blur materialised in his peripheral vision. Mew hovered near his shoulder, its tail curling around itself like a question mark.

"You absorbed the other fragment." Mew's mental voice carried an undertone of concern. "How do you feel?"

"No different from before." Lucas flexed his fingers. "But the changes to the System are wild."

Mew drifted closer, its azure eyes scanning him. "The merger shouldn't have happened at all. Your own fragment—"

"Hold up." Lucas froze. "What do you mean, my fragment?"

“It’s what gives you your powers. Consider yourself fortunate the absorption didn't go the other way."

"Lovely." Lucas's stomach lurched. "Care to elaborate on that possibility?"

“You could have lost your fragment to Jason. Both of you are lucky that the transition went as smoothly as it did.”

“I wouldn’t call it smooth.” Lucas' eyes narrowed. "What exactly happened to Jason?"

A sigh echoed in Lucas's mind. "Multiple factors. His psyche wasn't built for the System —too brittle, too inflexible. But Palkia's interference shattered what stability remained."

"What did he do?"

"Tried stealing the power for himself. Only managed half—enough to fracture Jason's mind."

"And Arceus?"

"Took the fragment back. Banished Palkia to another dimension after he had him find a replacement." Mew's mental voice carried a note of satisfaction. "Though he will likely return one day as Arceus’ influence wanes further."

Lucas's chest tightened. Palkia's greed had ripped him from his old life, but that world felt distant now, like a half-remembered dream. Would he trade all he had now to return?

The warmth of Sabrina curled against him at night, his Pokemon's unwavering loyalty, a universe where power wasn't just fantasy but thrummed through his veins. His old life offered safety and familiarity. This world promised danger, yes, but also wonders he'd never imagined possible. The answer settled in his gut like a stone: he belonged here now, in this reality of limitless horizons.

"You never mentioned any of this before," Lucas said "Why didn’t you mention Jason earlier?”

Mew shrugged. “Like I said earlier. It could have been dangerous for you if the two of you met. So I said nothing.”

"Right." Lucas pinched the bridge of his nose. "What about these System changes?"

Mew's only response was silence.

"Typical." An idea occurred to him. “Say, do you have any requests for me?”

Mew tilted his head. “Not particularly.”

“But I already helped you with Mewtwo,” Lucas said. “You should reward me. I’m sure I would have received a quest if I had the merged system back then.”

“You're delusional.”

The legendary vanished, leaving nothing but a faint psychic echo.

“What a miser,” Lucas grumbled. “Oh well, there are plenty more of his kind out there.”

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The next morning, grey clouds blanketed Slateport's harbour. As they approached the dock where the submarine was floating in the water, a tall man ambushed them, his teal hair styled in elegant waves beneath a white beret. His outfit screamed dramatic flair—a pure white cape draped over form-fitting purple clothes, with aqua accessories completing the ensemble.

"Hello, beautiful people," he said, arms spread wide.

Lucas stepped back as the man moved to embrace him. "You are?"

"My name is Wallace." He bowed with an elaborate flourish. "The Gym Leader of Sootopolis City."

"Are you coming on the expedition?" Sabrina asked.

"Indeed!" Wallace beamed. "As a water-type specialist, I can't help but be fascinated by the thought of exploring the Seafloor Cavern."

"He's also here as a deterrent," Captain Stern interjected, approaching them. "Team Aqua may try to reclaim the Scanner."

"They wouldn't dare with me present," Wallace said. "Now, let's discuss a more pressing issue."

He rummaged in his backpack and thrust two glossy flyers at them.

Lucas glanced down at the paper:

REVOLUTIONISE POKEMON COMPETITION! Support the Creation of Contest Halls Across Hoenn

Wallace brandished a clipboard. "I dreamt this up myself. Pokemon shouldn't only be about battles. There are other ways for trainers and Pokemon to express themselves on stage."

"Sounds interesting," Lucas said. "But we aren't Hoenn citizens. Our signatures don't count."

Wallace wagged a finger. "Don't be so sure. My dream is to spread Pokemon Contests to all regions. Besides, you two carry weight in some Hoenn circles. Your support matters."

Captain Stern sighed. "Please just sign so we can depart. Otherwise, we'll be here all day."

Lucas and Sabrina signed the petition and they boarded Stern's research submarine. Four crew members worked at their stations while Stern guided them to the main viewing area. Banks of monitors displayed sonar readings, depth measurements, and other data Lucas couldn't decipher.

"The sea grows restless," Stern said, studying the readings. "Kyogre's influence stretches further each day."

"Diving in five," a crewman announced.

The water rose past the portholes as they submerged. Sunlight filtered through the depths, casting shifting patterns across the deck plates. Schools of Remoraid darted past the submarine as they dove deeper into the depths of the sea.

Getting an idea, Lucas opened his map interface. He found only blank space. The map function didn't cover the underwater area. Lucas considered for a moment. He still had room to upgrade further, but he didn’t know if it would unlock the ability to map underwater. Still, three hundred thousand pokedollars was nothing to him at this point.

He spent his pokedollars on the upgrade and discovered it was the last one. The surroundings materialised on his display, slowly revealing itself in a twenty-metre radius around the submarine.

“How far down are we travelling?” Lucas asked.

“Thirteen kilometres,” Stern replied.

“What?” Lucas’ eyes widened. “You could have mentioned that before. Isn’t it dangerous at those depths?”

“Sure. Outside of the submarine, the water pressure would crush you in an instant.”

“So, how are we going to explore the Sea Cavern? Won’t the water pressure inside it be the same as outside?”

"The cave system is safe," Wallace explained, "thanks to the ancient Relicanth colonies. Their Rock Head ability naturally creates air pockets, and over thousands of years they've established a network of breathable chambers throughout the cavern system."

"The really fascinating part," Stern added, "is how they maintain the pressure. We've observed specialized Relicanth using Ancient Power to reinforce the cave walls. The crystalline structures they create naturally regulate the internal pressure."

"But how does that work with the ocean constantly trying to flood in?" Lucas asked.

"That's where it gets interesting," Wallace said. "The cave entrance is protected by a natural phenomenon we call a 'pressure lock.' Centuries of mineral deposits from water-type Pokemon have created a semi-permeable barrier. It allows small amounts of water through while maintaining the pressure difference."

"We've tried replicating it in labs," Stern noted, "but there's something unique about how the Pokemon work together to maintain it. The Relicanth's Ancient Power combines with deposits from other species—Corsola, Clamperl, even some deep-sea Pokemon we haven't identified yet."

The explanation made no sense to him but this was a world where Pokemon regularly defied natural laws. If Kyogre could control the seas themselves, why couldn't other water Pokemon create safe havens in the depths?

Lucas paused. But why was it necessary for Pokemon to create a stable environment for humans? It didn’t make any sense.

For the next three hours, the submarine continued to dive to the bottom of the ocean. As they got closer, Lucas heard ominous creaking noises coming from the submarine and tried not to show his nervousness. He doubted he would have time to raise a barrier to protect them if the submarine imploded. Furthermore, his barrier would likely crumple under the pressure in an instant.

"Approaching the cavern entrance," Stern said, adjusting their course.

The sub's lights illuminated a massive opening in the underwater cliff face. Stern guided them through the opening, the tunnel barely wide enough for their vessel.

The passage opened into a vast chamber. Their lights revealed ancient stone columns rising from the depths, their surfaces worn smooth by countless centuries underwater. A natural stone platform extended from one wall, forming a makeshift dock.

"We can moor here," Stern said, easing the submarine alongside the rock shelf.

They disembarked onto the slick stone. Even with the thermal clothes he wore, Lucas could feel the cold seeping into his bones. But it was bearable for the moment.

The cavern stretched upward into darkness, the sub's external lights providing limited illumination. The air smelled of salt and something unidentifiable.

“Where do these columns come from?” Sabrina asked. “They look man-made.”

Stern shrugged. “That’s the million-pokedollar question. It’s a big reason why I’m itching to explore this place.”

“DING!”

A chime reverberated through Lucas's skull, sharp and clear as a bell. A notification.

His hand shot up, instinctively touching his temple. Sabrina caught his eye, understanding flickering across her face.  He had told her about the new quirks of his system over breakfast this morning. She had taken the news in her stride, asking him several questions that he hadn’t considered himself.

Lucas drew Sabrina aside, as he opened the notification:

New Regional Quest!

Explore the Sea Cavern: Map out at least ninety percent of the area.

Reward: +50 reputation with the Hoenn Region, + 1 skill point.

He murmured the details in her ear.

Her lips curved. "So the system's rewarding us for something you'll do anyway? Seems like you've got the easiest job in the world."

"Can't argue with that logic." Lucas matched her grin. Free rewards were free rewards, after all.

Stern distributed headlamps while two crew members set up portable floodlights. "I’ve used underwater drones to explore the beginning of the tunnel system. It extends deeper into the rock. I believe Kyogre's main chamber lies further in but most of it remains unexplored. Be on your guard."

Lucas adjusted his headlamp and summoned Nero and Meowth. Nero snapped his jaws, looking around in interest. Meowth jumped onto his shoulder.

“This place freaks me out,” Meowth whispered in his ear. “Why did you bring me here?”

“When will you get another chance to explore a place like this for loot?”

“For once, I could do without the loot, Meowth.”

Lucas placed a hand on Meowth’s forehead. “Are you feeling alright?”

Meowth swatted his hand away.

Sabrina released Ashura, the Medicham's fighting expertise suited for the close quarters. “I need your help, Ashura.”

“Cham.” Medicham saluted Sabrina.

"Stay close," Stern warned, leading them into the tunnel. "It's easy to get turned around down here."

Their footsteps echoed off the stone walls. Water trickled somewhere in the darkness beyond their lights. The tunnel floor sloped steadily downward, worn steps suggesting this passage had once seen regular use.

After several minutes of walking, the tunnel split into three gaping mouths.

Stern squinted into the darkness, stroking his chin. "We have no way of determining what's beyond this point, We’ll have to explore each one."

Lucas nodded. That worked to his advantage.

"Look at this." Wallace stepped closer to the wall. "These markings—they're not random erosion. Look at the precision."

Lucas shifted his headlamp beam. Ancient glyphs covered the right tunnel's entrance, the symbols cut deep into volcanic rock. Waves flowed across the surface in intricate patterns, surrounding what appeared to be a massive Pokemon rendered in profile. Time had worn the edges, but the craftsmanship remained clear—this was no natural formation.

"Worth investigating," Stern agreed, running calloused fingers over the carvings. "Though we should—"

Nero tensed. His head snapped towards the middle passage. A deep growl resonated in his chest, vibrating through the stone beneath their feet.

"Something's down there," Meowth whispered, his claws puncturing Lucas's jacket, pricking skin.

A roar tore through the cavern, bouncing off stone walls until direction became meaningless. The crew members stumbled back, fumbling for pokeballs with shaking hands.

"Stay calm." Wallace's steady voice betrayed his tension as his fingers brushed a pokeball. "These caves likely host many species of Pokemon."

"Including Kyogre," Sabrina murmured.

Stern summoned a Swapert into the tunnel. "We have enough firepower between all of us. No need to be alarmed.”

"This feels like what the protagonist would say in a horror movie right before the shit hits the fan," Lucas muttered.

Everyone ignored his comment.

Shapes emerged from the darkness, gliding through air thick with salt and minerals. A dozen Relicanth moved with impossible grace, their rock-like bodies floating as if suspended in water. Ancient Power radiated from them in waves, bending gravity around their primitive forms. Their armoured scales caught the artificial light as they passed the group.

"Extraordinary." Stern's scientific detachment cracked with wonder. "They're manipulating gravity itself."

Thankfully, the gravity wasn’t enough to affect them adversely. The Relicanth acted as if they weren’t even there and continued swimming up the tunnel. After waiting for several minutes to ensure they didn’t return, the group continued forward. They chose the central passage, even though it probably led to the Pokemon they heard earlier.

The tunnel kept sloping downward gradually. After several minutes of walking, Lucas' headlamp beam caught fragments of mosaic tiles beneath layers of mineral deposits. The patterns emerged slowly—stylised waves and aquatic Pokemon rendered in faded blues and greens, sweeping across walls and down corridors that branched deeper into the rock.

"These weren't made by Pokemon," Stern murmured, crouching to examine a section where time had stripped away the crusted sediment. His fingers traced the precise edges of cut stone. "The workmanship is unmistakably human."

"Look at this." Wallace directed his light towards an alcove. Stone benches lined the walls, facing what appeared to be an altar. Crude pictographs covered the curved ceiling—stick figures bowing before a massive shape Lucas recognised as Kyogre.

"A temple," Sabrina breathed. "They worshipped here."

"But why is it here?" A crew member asked. "How did humans survive down here?"

"Perhaps they had help from the Pokemon,” Stern said.

Lucas nodded. He had been thinking the same thing.

They pressed deeper into the complex. More chambers branched off the main passage —living quarters carved into rock, storage rooms with shattered pottery, and spaces whose purposes time had erased. Everything bore signs of careful construction, of people who had lived and worked in these depths.

"The craftsmanship is incredible," Wallace said, examining a carved doorway. "To achieve this level of detail with primitive tools..."

Meowth's claws dug into Lucas's shoulder. "Partner, something's not right here."

Before Lucas could respond, his headlamp beam caught something that made his blood run cold. Bodies lay scattered across the chamber ahead, preserved by the cave's unique environment. Their clothes had long since rotted away, but their bones remained, sprawled in positions of terror.

"They didn't leave," Sabrina whispered. "They died here."

Lucas stepped closer, careful not to disturb the remains. These people hadn't died peacefully—bones bore deep scoring marks, and many skulls showed signs of crushing trauma.

"What could have done this?" one of the crew members asked.

A grinding sound echoed through the cavern. Stone scraped against stone somewhere in the darkness ahead.

"Nobody move," Wallace breathed.

Nero's growl vibrated through the stone floor. The Krokorok's teeth positioned himself between Lucas and the noise.

The grinding grew louder. Water trickled down the walls as something massive shifted deeper in the complex. The sound spoke of weight beyond human comprehension, of ancient power stirring after centuries of slumber.

"We need to leave," Meowth hissed. "Now."

Ashura's fists blazed with psychic energy as Sabrina backed towards the exit. The crew members' faces had gone pale, their hands shaking as they clutched pokeballs.

A roar shook the cavern, so deep it resonated in Lucas's bones. Fragments of tile cracked and fell from the ceiling. The sound held rage and hunger in equal measure—emotions that had festered in darkness for untold years.

"That's not Kyogre," Wallace said, his usual theatrical tone replaced by raw fear.

The grinding drew closer. Lucas's headlamp beam caught movement in the darkness—a flash of scales, the gleam of teeth, then darkness as something blocked the tunnel completely.

Red eyes opened in the blackness, full of malice. They fixed on the group with predatory focus, and Lucas realised with horrible certainty that they had stumbled into something's lair.

Whatever had killed the ancient worshippers still lived here, deep below the waves where the light had never reached. And they had just woken it up.

Lucas and Sabrina glanced at each other, thinking the same thing. Who was the idiot who said they would earn an easy reward?

So, what do you think? In the next chapter, the group confronts the Pokemon they had awakened.

Thanks for reading.
