Harry Potter: The Mage's Path Chapter 16

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or any of the intellectual property associated with Harry Potter.

Hi all,

Here’s the next chapter. I’m not completely happy with it, as there is not much going on in this chapter. The first half is with Dumbledore as he meets with his little alliance in the Ministry.

July 14th

Dumbledore strode through the halls of the Ministry. His tall figure dressed in flamboyant gold robes was instantly recognisable. As soon as they saw him, Ministry workers made way for him, and he smiled at them in thanks. He was headed for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. A meeting was being held with Amelia Bones and a few other notable characters in the Ministry who were not part of Fudge's administration.

There will be a discussion today regarding the current situation with the Dungeons. In the last week, another Dungeon appeared in Ireland, bringing the total number to twelve across the United Kingdom. Five of these appeared this year alone, so the rate at which they escalated was alarming.

Dumbledore stepped through the doorway into the reception area. The receptionist, Paula, looked up and smiled. "You can head inside; everyone else has already arrived."

She jumped up and opened the door to Amelia's office.

'Thank you, Paula.' If he remembered correctly, she had been a Hufflepuff who had finished Hogwarts a few years ago, but he couldn't recall much else about her.

Dumbledore stepped into the office and greeted everyone that was sitting down in seats arranged in a semi-circle facing Amelia's large oak desk. Alastor Moody, Saul Croaker, Arthur Weasley and Augusta Longbottom were among the group.

"It's about time you got here," Amelia barked. Her greying red hair looked frazzled as if she had been running her hands through it. The Director of the DMLE sat behind her desk, with a stand beside her, displaying the map of the United Kingdom. All of the current Dungeons were circled with the date beside them, indicating when they first appeared.

Amelia stood up and opened the door, leaning her head out. "Paula, I'm activating the silencing and lockdown wards on the door because I don't want to be interrupted. If anyone asks, I'm not here. There is a rune on the underside of the desk. Press it to summon me if there is an emergency."

"I understand, Director Bones," Paula replied.

As she shut the door and activated the wards, she growled, "I keep telling her to call me Amelia."

Amelia served everyone a glass of whisky from a bottle in her drawer, except for Dumbledore, who declined.

Dumbledore transfigured the empty seat into his preferred comfortable throne chair before sitting down. "Forgive me, Amelia. I just spent a rather frustrating time with Minister Fudge about a personal issue. It seems that he has been blocking me at every turn for some inexplicable reason."

"What's it about?" Saul Croaker, an Unspeakable from the Department of Mysteries, asked curiously. He sat furthest away from Dumbledore and wasn't wearing the usual hood that concealed his face. It was not often that the Unspeakables showed their faces to anyone, not even the Minister of Magic. However, the small group of people had a certain amount of trust in each other.

They had a vested interest in making sure that Magical Britain survived and flourished. Their alliance was still fresh, but they had rallied together as they did not trust Minister Fudge to deal with the looming crisis. With Lucius Malfoy in his corner, all he was concerned about was profiteering from the Dungeons and not the danger they represented.

Dumbledore hesitated, but it wasn't an especially sensitive secret, so he answered the man. "I'm looking to unseal James and Lily Potter's will. It was a foolish decision to seal it in the first place. However, I wasn't the only one who sought to seal the will. The Minister of Magic, Millicent Bagnold, wanted the same thing."

Alastor Moody grunted, his electric blue eye twirling in his socket. "Who was the witness to the signing of the will?"

It was curious to see Alastor in the office since he was now retired. The only work he had done recently was taking Nymphadora Tonks on as an apprentice. Dumbledore had noticed her interest in pursuing a career with the Aurors. He had passed her information on to Alastor Moody, who didn't hesitate to offer her an apprenticeship. The combination of her excellent grades and the fact that she was a Metamorphagus was too irresistible to ignore. Nymphadora was fast-tracked through the rest of her sixth year and skipped her seventh year entirely, sitting for her NEWT exams much earlier.

Rufus Scrimgeour, the Head of the Auror Department, was noticeably absent. Amelia must not trust the man enough to join their group. It made sense as the man was highly ambitious, and there was some suspicion that he was reporting information to Minister Fudge.

"It was my son, Frank," Augusta Longbottom said with a flat expression. The old battleaxe sat in her chair like a queen, not even bothering to take off her hideous hat with a stuffed vulture attached to it. "There is no way he can divulge the contents of the Potter's will to anyone."

"So there is something in the will that the two Ministers of Magic don't want to be seen." Arthur Weasley said, the last person in the room to speak up. He was a very reliable man who liked to listen and make his own judgement before offering his opinion.

"If we want to surpass Fudge's authority," Augusta said. "Then we need to raise the issue in the Wizengamot. The next session will not be held until the Autumn Equinox in September. There is no way that we could justify an emergency session for the unsealing of a will. I don't know if that will be successful, however."

"I would prefer it to be much sooner than that," Dumbledore said.

"Hmm," Croaker rubbed his chin in consideration. "I have been holding onto some dirt on Fudge for a while. It's not worth much, but it should be enough to get the will unsealed. But is it worth it to play the card for one boy?"

"Tonks has mentioned him to me," Moody said. "The young man is certainly a character. I suggest you help him because he may prove an asset in the future. He has a very useful ability considering our current situation."

"What is it?" Amelia leaned forward over her desk. If Moody was interested in Harry Potter, then it must be significant.

"Apparently, he has an inherent ability to use a form of apparition that allows him to escape the Dungeons."

"What?" Amelia exclaimed. "That certainly is interesting. If only he weren't a minor. I would push hard to recruit him into the Aurors. Why didn't Tonks say anything?"

Dumbledore was also surprised. Not even Fawkes could use his flame travel to escape the Dungeons. It was the first thing he tried when they first started appearing. It only strengthened his suspicions about the boy being a Mage. However, he didn't intend to share that information with anyone.

"Probably because she was looking out for her second cousin,” Dumbledore said. “If certain individuals learned of his ability, they would seek to exploit him, which I will not condone. The information cannot leave this room."

There was unanimous agreement among the group. A few of them had children the same age as Harry. They wouldn't allow anyone to bring harm to the boy.

"You recently met Harry. What is he like?" Augusta asked eagerly, losing her rigid posture momentarily.

It was no surprise that she would show interest in the boy. The Longbottom and Potter families had a long-standing alliance that went back centuries. Not to mention that her son and daughter-in-law were very close to James and Lily. The latter was even Harry's godmother

"He certainly wasn't shy about sharing his scathing opinion about my failings," Dumbledore chuckled.

"As well as he should," Augusta glared at the man, making him shift in his seat uncomfortably. "You may have been under the influence of a curse, but that doesn't excuse your actions. From what I understand of what went on in that house, you are lucky that he did not become an Obscurus."

Dumbledore shuddered. Harry was already powerful for his age. Imagining him turning into an Obscurus was a very frightening thought.

"Let's move on to why we are here," Amelia ordered. She pointed to the map of the United Kingdom. "As you can see, there are now twelve Dungeons, with five appearing only this year. It appears to be escalating, and we are currently being crippled by Fudge and his administration. He won't increase the budget for my Auror department."

"The Ministry must be making a fair bit of money from the increased revenue," Arthur pointed out. "Where is the extra money being allocated?"

"I would like to know that as well," Amelia groaned. "But I would need some compelling evidence to audit the Ministry coffers."

"That is another thing that we will have to deal with at some point," Croaker said. "However, I don't think that we are desperate for manpower yet. You forget that the Crown is now aware of the problem, and they have their own small magical force. I do not doubt that they are already planning to venture into the Dungeons at some point. Furthermore, the Adventurers Guild is close to opening, which will attract more individuals looking to make some money by exploring the Dungeons."

"That was an inspired idea," Dumbledore said admiringly. "Who would ever guess that the Unspeakables were the true owners of the guild?"

"You are liable to run into problems with the Ministry, though," Arthur said. "They are already trying to claim ownership of the Dungeons, although so far, they haven't been successful. If they can't achieve that, then they may look to shut you down to eliminate the competition."

"That would be a disaster." Amelia leaned back in her chair and sighed. "All of the responsibility would fall on our shoulders to secure and explore the Dungeons, and we already have a hard time keeping up with our normal duties. However, what concerns me even more is that Cornelius has mentioned in passing about creating his own private mercenary group. He says it is to combat the Dungeons, but I think he is securing himself in case things escalate out of control. If that happens, there will be anarchy, and he will have his own private army at his disposal."

They all shared looks as the gravity of the situation fully hit them. If the Dungeons continued to escalate, there could soon be an apocalyptic event that could threaten not only the magical world but the mundane as well.

"We are about to face a crisis that will dwarf even the scale of Grindelwald's war," Dumbledore rubbed his face. "Furthermore, I have reliable information that the denizens of The Abyss are stirring as well."

"What?" Croaker sat up in urgency. "How reliable is your information?"

Upon hearing the news, everyone exclaimed in horror. They were aware of the threat they posed to the world. The inhabitants of the Abyss were usually content to stay in their own domain. In the Abyss, time slowed even further the deeper you delved into the lower dimensions. However, the environment had a negative effect on the minds of those living there, and they grew more violent. Some discarded their morality and, in others, lost their minds to insanity. Only those with strong willpower could resist the mental degradation. It's why there were so many magicals that stayed away from the Abyss, as they considered the downsides outweighed the benefits.

"I talked to a former occupant," Dumbledore said. "Things are in chaos in the Abyss dimension at the moment. Not only are the Dungeons present there, but they have been skirmishing with a new foe that appears to be using Divinity magic."

"If it rains, it pours," Croaker muttered. "Divinity Magic hasn't been seen in centuries, as far as I can tell. Are they related to the Dungeons appearing?"

For the next hour, they continued to discuss and make plans. It may seem like they were alarmists, but with all their experience between them, they understood the precipice they were standing on. Before they wrapped up the meeting, Dumbledore brought up another topic concerning Hogwarts.

"I wanted to discuss an idea I had for the coming school year," Dumbledore rested his chin in his hands. "It occurred to me that the students may not have the luxury of having seven years of structured education if things continue to worsen. My idea was to throw away the class system, and have students learn at their own pace. They will continue to be supervised by teachers, but their education will be more dynamic. I believe that they can learn more in a shorter amount of time."

"You will never get it past the school governors," Augusta growled. "Especially with Lucius Malfoy as one of its members. If you started teaching on merit, then it wouldn't surprise me that half the purebloods would get humiliated by the muggleborn students. It will destroy the pureblood supremacists' rhetoric that they are superior."

"That's right," Amelia grimaced. "I think it's a smart idea, and my niece is starting Hogwarts this September, so I don't want her to be held back. However, it's impossible."

"Not exactly," Dumbledore said slowly. "I know of an heir to the Ravenclaw line. If he were to be emancipated, and take up his family title, he would be able to take control of Hogwarts back from the School Governors."

"That's impossible," Croaker said fervently. "The Unspeakables have carefully traced the lineage of the four founders, and no family exists today that is related to them."

Dumbledore paused before he continued. He realised that if he revealed this information, then he was already committed to the path. He didn't want to burden the boy, but he had a change of heart after meeting him. The boy was mature enough, and certainly no pushover. With some guidance, he could become a fantastic leader. Maybe he was being presumptuous, but he wanted the boy to be his successor. If it really was true that he was a Mage, then his potential was limitless.

Deciding to take the plunge, Dumbledore spoke. "Actually, the Potter family has a direct link to Ravenclaw."

"But how?" Croaker demanded.

"I cannot say,” Dumbledore said. “James Potter gave me the information in confidence as insurance if anything happened to him. Once I share it with Harry, it will be up to him if he wants to reveal the information.”

“Well, I’m certainly all for it,” Croaker said. “It would be good to see Hogwarts go independent again. Is that why you are in a hurry to get the will unsealed?”

“Yes. I suspect that James Potter has left instructions for Harry to be emancipated when he turns eleven,” Dumbledore nodded. “However, the will has to be read for the directive to take effect, or else he will have to wait until he reaches his majority. Maybe that is the reason why the Minister is blocking the unsealing of the will, although I cannot imagine why. I hardly imagine that the will would reveal their connection to the Ranclaw line.”

“You are forgetting something,” Arthur pointed out reasonably. “How would the previous Minister of Magic know what was contained in the will?”

“They may not know the contents of the will,” Moody grunted. “They only have to suspect that something is there.”

“I will work on Fudge,” Croaker said with determination, turning to Dumbledore. “Give me a couple of days to get the will unsealed.”

Dumbledore thanked him with a nod.

“Alright, we will end the meeting here,” Amelia said. “We have our own individual tasks going forward, so take care and don’t get caught.”

<====({owo})====>

July 15th

"Happy birthday to me," Harry quietly sang as he walked down the street towards Privet Drive. He was returning from the gym, and had stopped by the supermarket to stock up on ingredients. Today he was taking it easy as he was starting to feel the mental strain of forcing himself to train for so many hours in a row. If he didn't take a break, he felt that he would drive himself crazy.

Besides, technically speaking, it was his birthday today, as he was older by sixteen days due to the time spent in the Dungeon. He even brought himself a simple birthday cake to celebrate with Hedwig and Celeste.

Tomorrow, he was going to tackle the second floor of the Peverell Dungeon. He had surpassed the level requirement for it, and with his current offensive capabilities, he was confident that he could clear it without any problems.

Harry stooped when his name was called and he turned and saw Mrs Figgs standing in her front yard, the batty old lady that occasionally looked after him when he was growing up. Despite his grumbling, he walked up to the woman.

Even though it meant getting out of the Dursley house, he used to hate spending time at her place. This is because her house smelled like cabbages and it was overrun by cats. He didn't mind them in small doses, but there must be at least a dozen of them running around the place. Harry recalled spending hours sitting and listening to her drone about her cats, which was torturous. Harry would rather have a tea party with Aunt Petunia and gossip about the neighbours.

"Hello, Harry."

"Good morning, Mrs Figg."

The way she was dressed was, to put it mildly, strange. Mrs Figg always wore a hairnet covering her gray flyaway hair. Also, no matter how hot it was outside, she always wore an overcoat to cover her frail frame and a pair of carpet slippers on her feet.

She looked around before stepping closer and lowering her voice. "Dumbledore told me that you are now aware of the magical world."

"What?!' Harry stepped back in surprise. Who the hell was this woman and how did she know Dumbledore? Was it just a mere coincidence that she happened to live just a few streets over from him? He used observation on her to see if he could find some answers.

=====

Arabella Figg | Age: 57 | Magic: Null | Condition: Fine

Description: Arabella Figg is a squib, a non-magical person that is born to magical parents. She became a member of the Order of the Phoenix in the First Wizarding War, which was Dumbledore's secret organisation established to counter Voldemort and his supporters. She moved into Little Whinging in 1981 at the request of Albus Dumbledore, who asked her to look out for the young wizard, Harry Potter. She is a dealer in cross-breed cats and kneazles, and she sells them to various stores throughout Europe.

=====

"Harry?"

"What do you want, Mrs Figg?" Harry asked, a touch less friendly. Surely this woman had known about his abuse if she was keeping a close eye on him. Why had she not done anything?

Mrs Figg seemed to be able to discern his thoughts, and her mouth turned down in an unhappy expression. "There's no denying that I failed you, just as Dumbledore did. I reported the incidents to Dumbledore, but he seemed to lose interest as the years passed. I did my part to help you, such as offering to babysit you when I was able. I apologize that I couldn't do more for you."

Harry nodded. He appreciated the apology, but he still wasn't happy with the woman.

"I thought about calling for child welfare," Arabella continued. "But there was the risk that they would place you in a home outside of the Whinging area, where you would not be protected."

Harry could understand that point. Maybe he would have been safe from Voldemort's supporters that were looking to harm him, as he assumed that they weren't too familiar with the non-magical world. However, his encounter with Angelica made him realise that there was more than one group of people after him. No matter how much he hated to admit it, he was safe from his enemies while living with the Dursleys.

"I know this is presumptuous of me," Mrs Figg said. "But I was hoping that you could help me with something? Mr Tibbles, my oldest companion, has gone missing. I thought that you may be able to find him now that you have access to magic."

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the small 'exclamation mark' icon that indicated that he had received a new quest. Assuming he would get a nice reward, he decided to help Mrs Figg.

"When was the last time you saw him?" Harry asked.

"About two days ago. I fed him his morning meal and he wandered off to explore. I usually let my cats roam the neighbourhood, as they are half kneazles. They are really intelligent creatures, and are excellent judges of character. So I wasn't worried that Mr Tibbles would get into trouble."

"Has he stayed away this long before?"

"No. He always returns for his evening meal. Which is why I am concerned."

Harry frowned. The area he would have to search would not be small. Maybe he should get Hedwig and Celeste to help him. "I will start by looking around the neighbourhood. Which one was Mr Tibbles again? Do you have a photo of him that I can use?"

"I will go and get one." Arabella hurried back inside her house and emerged shortly with a photograph of Mr Tibbles. He was definitely a big cat, with a wild mane of ginger fur covering his body

“Thank you, dear.” Mrs Figgs stepped back into her house.

Harry opened his notifications and looked at the new quest he had received.

=====

New Quest received!

Mr Tibbles Wild Encounter

Description: Mr Tibbles has gone missing, and Mrs Figgs has tasked you with finding him. Search the neighbourhood for clues as to his whereabouts, and find him before it's too late. Be vigilant, though!

Objective(s):

Search for clues in the neighbourhood.

???????

Find Mr Tibbles.

Time Limit: Six hours.

Reward: +2 Charisma.

=====

So there was the solution to raising his Charisma attribute, Harry mused. If he could get a few more quests like this, he would reach twenty Charisma in no time. But he was getting ahead of himself. First, he needed to complete this quest successfully.

'Celeste, where are you?'

'Hedwig and I are exploring. Why?'

'Can you guys return? I need your eyes and ears for a quest I received.'

'But I'm having fun—'

{Hedwig} 'We will be there shortly, hatchling.'

As their bond increased, the range in which they could telepathically communicate increased. Harry estimated that the maximum radius was now five miles at most.

A short time later, Harry's familiars arrived, and he found a concealed spot so no one would see them. After showing them the quest, Celeste seemed to be upset.

"What's the matter?"

"The rewards suck because they only benefit you. What's in it for me?" Celeste not so subtly rubbed her fingers together as an indication that she was looking for some cash.

"I already share a portion of the loot we farm in the Dungeon. You cannot spend even half of that, so why do you need more?" Harry asked.

"It's a matter of principle. You shouldn't have to work for free. My mama didn't raise me to be a tool," Celeste crossed her arms and gave him a superior look.

“I thought you were an orphan?” Harry said.

“Step-mum,” Celeste corrected.

'Can we get to the matter at hand?' Hedwig ruffled her feathers in annoyance.

"Right," Harry said sheepishly. He took out a hundred-pound note and held it up for Celeste to see. "This will be yours once the quest is completed."

"Deal," Celeste cheered.

Harry reached out a hand and stroked Hedwig’s feathers. "Hey, girl. I want you to scan the neighbourhood from the air and see if you can see Mr Tibbles or anything unusual. Focus on the Little Whinging area for now."

'Okay.'

"Celeste and I will search Little Whinging methodically. She will begin by searching Magnolia Road first, while I will begin on Privet Drive. Make sure to be thorough, Celeste."

"Got it," Celeste said. They flew off and Harry made his way back to Privet Drive and began a systematic search for Mr Tibbles. He had to be careful not to upset any neighbours who were at home, as he was intruding on their property. Because of the Dursleys, he was seen as a delinquent, and so they probably thought that he was planning to rob their house.

Besides actually finding Mr Tibbles, he didn't know exactly what to look for in terms of clues. He began observing anything that seemed unusual, but the information it revealed proved useless. After an hour, he finished with Privet Drive and moved onto Wisteria Walk. Meanwhile, Celeste began searching the park after she finished searching Magnolia Road.

He was a third of the way through searching the street when Celeste sent a message.

'I found something in the park. There is some fur and blood near the west entrance gate.'

'That doesn't sound good. I will come and have a look once I have finished with this street.'

Fifteen minutes later, he finished searching Wisteria Walk but didn't find anything that could be a clue to Mr Tibbles' whereabouts. He hurried over to the park, where he saw Hedwig perched on the western gate. Celeste became visible again as he approached.

"Nice work. Where is it?"

Celeste pointed him to a small area surrounded by some bushes a few metres away. Harry spotted blood and tufts of fur on the ground. He compared it to the photo in his hand. The colour of the fur was identical to Mr Tibble's coat. There wasn't enough blood for Mr Tibbles to die from his injury, so he was still alive when he left here. He wondered if he could find his trail.

Celeste flew over and perched herself on his shoulder. "Did you find anything?”

"Mr Tibbles was attacked by something and was injured. Can you see a trail of blood anywhere?"

Celeste flew around the area while Harry examined the blood closer. Harry was interested to see if he could identify something by their blood alone. He was pleasantly surprised when Observation revealed not one but two sources that were responsible for the blood on the ground. The first was identified as belonging to a cat-kneazle hybrid. The other source belonged to something called a Matagot, but there was no further information. He had never heard of the creature before.

Celeste flew back with an excited look on her face. "There's a surface access point to the sewers on the other side of the park. I think that Mr Tibbles may have entered. There's a gate, but there's a broken section that would allow him to squeeze through."

A notification informed him that his objective had been updated.

=====

Objective Complete: Search for clues in the neighbourhood.

Current Objective: ??????

=====

"Looks like we are going to get dirty," Harry grimaced. "So I identified the creature. It seems that Mr Tibbles managed to wound it as well. Its blood reveals that it is a Matagot. Have you heard of them before?"

"Yes. They are native to France. They are popular companions with the Aurors as they are resistant to magic and can multiply themselves upon being hit with offensive spells, such as the Stunning Spell. They take the form of a black cat, similar to a Sphynx but a lot more alien looking. When they are fully mature, they can reach a height of about half a metre."

"That doesn't sound good," Harry gulped. "So is it likely to attack us on sight?"

"Yes, most are known to be evil in nature, but some are benign. The French Aurors wouldn't be able to use them otherwise."

There was no time to hesitate. Based on the time limit of the quest, Mr Tibble wouldn't last much longer. He wasn't thrilled about entering the sewer, and he was slightly scared to confront the Matagot as it sounded like a difficult fight. But he would face more terrible situations in the future, so he couldn't just shy away from things when he was afraid.

"Hedwig, do you want to stay here?" Harry asked. "It's going to be difficult for you to fly in the sewers."

'I'm coming with you, hatchling.'

"Can I stay here?" Celeste wrinkled her nose. "I don't want to travel through stinky sewers."

"Neither do I," Harry said. "But it has to be done. Let's go."

Harry looked around before dropping into the ditch and entering the huge sewer pipe by the side of the road. The locked gate barred his way, but it meant little to him.

'Alohomora.'

The gate clicked open, and Harry walked through and shut it behind him. With Celeste and Hedwig perched on his shoulders, he entered the dark and putrid sewer system.

'Lumos.'

The tip of his wand was illuminated by a bright light which revealed rounded concrete walls and a low-hanging ceiling. He followed the pipe as it descended downwards until he reached the intersection of the main tunnel. There was a canal in the middle, which was filled with sickly greyish-black sewerage water. Immediately, Harry's nostrils were filled with the stench of sewerage and he held his nose to try and ward off the smell.

"I don't care about money anymore," Celeste cried, burying her head in his shirt. "Get me out of here."

'A most unpleasant place.' Hedwig agreed.

"Bear with it," Harry said nasally. "Which way do we go?"

"Who cares?"

Harry shrugged and turned right, following the walkway. Besides the sound of the water and his footsteps, there was complete silence. He didn't know why he was even here. It was the most unpleasant place he had ever been. Surely the reward was not worth the effort to walk through this shithole?

Ten minutes later, they reached another intersection. He looked around, but there was no sign that Mr Tibbles had ever come down here. Was this a fool's errand? Suddenly, a roar sounded, echoing off the walls and making him jump in fright.

"Was that the Matagot?" Harry asked. "Where did it come from?"

'It came from over there.' Hedwig lifted a wing and pointed straight ahead of her. She had the best hearing, so he trusted her judgement.

Harry gripped his wand tighter and crossed the small bridge across the channel. His nerves were starting to get the better of him, so he took a few breaths to calm himself down.

'Okay, let's speak over the bond from here on out, Celeste.'

{Celeste} 'Got it. Keep your eyes peeled for the Matagot. They are fast.'

A few minutes later, Harry paused as he spotted an opening on his right. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as he felt a presence just beyond his sight. Celeste and Hedwig took flight, both sensing the same thing and they prepared for battle.

As Harry stepped around the corner with his wand raised, he was confused as to why he did not see anything. He heard a growl and looked up to see the terrifying large glowing blue eyes of the Matagot that was crouched on a small ledge above him.

“Oh, fuck,” Harry cursed as the creature pounced.

So, what do you think? The Matagots were my favourite thing about The Crimes of Grindelwald. To be fair, most of the movie didn’t set a very high standard.

I’m playing around with the quests a bit, as I have received some complaints on fanfiction about not showing rewards. Because some of Harry's quests may take months to complete, I find it limiting to name the rewards right away, as they may become redundant by the time they are completed.

So, I’m thinking of only labelling rewards for quests that take less than a week. Like the one in this chapter for example, and daily quests. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for reading.

Questing time! Hope the cat is okay. Poor little guy.

That's a nice idea. I will implement it in the future. Cheers.

Just a suggestion but in actual games, sometimes quests get scaled to your level, so for long-term quests, you could get something like "Level Scaled [Item Name]" or "Random Level-Scaled [Category of Item]". Or for cash, something like "X Galleons x Level upon Completion" Or for XP Rewards, you could have a fixed % of the XP in your current level be the reward (So something like "+12% of your current level's XP requirements upon completion"). You could do the same with Stats where you get a % stat rise of your current unboosted Stat Total in the relevant category (E.g. "+5% to Base Str.") All those would scale pretty decently with Level and would still let people know what is going to be gotten without locking in numbers. In regards to gaining skills as rewards, you could always just have the reward be something like "A Random Relevant Level-Scaled Skill" instead of specifying and then just have Harry roll whatever skill you decide you want to reward him with in regards to where he has progressed to at the time of the quest completion. That way you would still, in broad terms, be letting people know what the rewards are without locking yourself into anything too specific.
