1985 World Cup

History

The most popular soccer game in the 80's arcades was released by Tehkan, the former name of Tecmo in 1985.

There were two types of cabinet of it: upright one which had a uniform shape when viewed from the side and table one which had a step or gap between the control panel and the table. Many people were injured by over-enthusiastic trackball operation, hitting their little fingers hard or pinching them in the gap.

The game was controlled with a trackball, which was rare for a competitive game, allowing the player a high degree of freedom in terms of the direction of movement, the angle at which the ball was kicked and the strength and weakness of the ball. The development team simplified the controls so that players could run with a trackball and kick with a single button. No ‘offside’ and ‘fouls’ rules either, making the gameplay better suited for an arcade.

When playing against the CPU, you face a different country on each stage. Character data was thoroughly constructed using a ‘behaviour programm’ based on the playing characteristics of each country at the time. The game was also attractive because it was possible to play not only against the CPU but also against human opponents. Tehkan manufactured this cabinet in order to launch Gridiron Fight (known as All American Football) in February of that year, which unfortunately was not very popular in Japan, this game was developed to clear the stock of the Gridiron Fight cabinet.

The game was subsequently made into a series, but from the second game onwards the controls were changed to lever controls rather than a trackball. Was this change due to severe trackball damage and wear and tear?

Technical Trivia

The original board uses a trackball but bootlegs use a joystick. The conversion is done by replacing the spin counters on the PCB by fixed values. These values were not the best choice and would produce the player speed to differ depending on the direction.

The core currently reproduces the bootleg hardware, including the imperfect direction speed. This is a feature not emulated in MAME, so some people may find it nostalgic. There is a way to correct the direction speed on real hardware. On the next update, we will have analog control support, to mimick the trackball gameplay.

I have extracted the schematics for the bootleg and compared them to an original board. The only difference is the above mentioned trackball-joystick conversion. The schematics are missing a handful of minor signals that I will get to for completeness. It is currently over 95% completed.

Patches to MAME done after our research so far

thanks will check it out - also if your using a pocket and dock and have 2 controllers do 2 player games work?

mac

Please have a look of this installation guide. https://github.com/jotego/jtbin/wiki/Analogue-Pocket-Cores

This issue hasn't yet been resolved. https://github.com/jotego/jtcores/issues/515

JOTEGO

Not yet. We have the analogue stick support ready for the next update. We may have the trackball ready in future. We'll see.

This key invalidates NGPC.

Help - just got my pocket and subscribed to the patreon - but wondering what zips I need - found the friday one above but what does the jtbeta include (if i unzip just get a tiny file) and where are zips like jtcps1 and jtkiwi?(which oner is outrun in) - note will update my cores using pocketupdater when have moved everything onto the card

mac

Still the same problem with Outrun persists for me on the Pocket with there being no sprites. Have deleted the core and assets folder. Redownloaded them and that doesn’t fix it.

ElloMrChris

It is MISTer in my case

The MiST/SiDi version have them broken. They work on MiSTer/Pocket. I need to look into it.

JOTEGO

Great work! In DIP switches I think that timer is not working. Whatever you change it is always set to 2 minutes in gameplay

Victor Nandez

Thanks 🤗

Adrien Duchemole

Thank you for reporting it. I was turned off by mistake. I have re-uploaded the files with PCM sound enabled.

JOTEGO

Thank you

JOTEGO

More awesomeness!!

LL

Thanks Jotego! Love this one :-)

Findamember

It's possible to recreate original trackball based PCB too? I have trackball on Taito Egret 2 controller too

Roberto Lari

Hi Thanks for adding this game, spent so much time on it Samples are missing (audience, drums samples)

Adrien Duchemole

This is awesome! I have trackball! Hooraaaay!

Muchas gracias 😊

First competitive game to use a trackball was Atari Football: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_(1978_video_game) . Great core, love your work, but had to correct the error. Thanks for all you do!

Allen Tipper

Nice work, Thank you!

Tetra

I don't like "Football" that much but my goodness is this game a lot of fun. When you say you are adding Analog controls will that only be for joysticks or will you be adding trackball controls too? I am always hoping for the MiSter to support multiple mice/trackballs.

Matthew Belshan

one of the few and first that I ever finished, even if I don’t like football. Huge thanks!

Francisco Blazquez

Thanks!

Jordi Clement

Love this! Thank you Jotego and team

Ryan Kasper

Thank you once again!! I'd love to see Bomb Jack some day, I loved that game!

Alberto Paladino

As a footballer, I've been playing this game on MAME for quite a long time🕹Thank you soooo much for developing an FPGA vsersion and deliver the authentic arcade experience via MiSTer & AP!! It's such a great ⚽️ game👍🏻👍🏻

Tony Shong

You may have a problem with the ROM files.

JOTEGO

Excelente lo voy a probar con el trackball

ronalvel .

World Cup is awesome it was one of my Dad's favorites!!! On a side note, I don't know if I am being special or not, but X-Men still doesn't work for me on Mister. I've heard something might need to be done manually but I can't seem to get a full answer.
